Notes for James Hadlock:

Gen. Dict of New Eng. Settlers: Vol. 2, p. 327: "James Hadlock, Roxbury, married 19 May 1669, Sarah Draper, had Sarah, b. 16 Dec. 1670, removed to Salem, there had, in 1678, wife Rebecca, daughter probably of Richard Hutchinson; sons James, and John, daughters Mary, Hannah, Sarah, and Rebecca. But possibly he had some of these by another wife for the will of Hutchinson, 1682, calls him son-in-law, but names not the wife nor any Hadlock grandchildren except Sarah. James, jr. was included in the tax list (Mr. Felt assures me) of 1682 for Salem village."

- Will of JAMES HADLOCK:
In the name of God, Amen. The 8th day of September 1714, I James Hadlock of the town of Amesbury, yeoman, being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God, therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executrix, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Almighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate where with it has pleased God to bless me in this life, I give demise and depose of the land in following manner and form.
Imprimis, I give and bequeath to my son Samuel 12 pounds, to my daughter, Sarah George 12 pounds; to my daughter Abigail Lowell twelve pounds; and to my daughter Damaris 12 pounds; to my daughter Hannah twelve pounds; to my daughter Mary twelve pounds; to my daughter Ruth all my household goods after my wife's decease. To my son Joseph my gun and sword.
Item - I give to my well beloved wife Abigail whom I likewise constitute, make and ordain my sole executrix of this my last will and testament all and singular my land and housing by her freely to be possessed and enjoyed, and I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disinall all and every other former testament or will by me in any way before named, willed and bequeathed.
And it is my will that if my wife has not occasion in her life, time to dispose my said land that my son Joseph shall have both the land and the housing at her decease.
Ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament.
In writings whereof I have hereto set my hand and sealed the day and year above written.
Signed, sealed and delivered by the said James Hadlock as his last will and testament in the presence of us the subscribers.
