John Bowles was born Abt. 1782  Ballickmoyler, Queens County (now Co. Laois), Ireland and died in May 1818 in Ballickmoyler, Queens County (now Co. Laois), Ireland.

 

Wife Elizabeth Dickson was born Abt. 1785 in Ireland, and died Aft. January 1825.  They were married 25 July 1808 in Dublin, Ireland.

 

 

Their children were:

 

1- Thomas Bowles  b: 4 July 1809  Ballickmoyler, Queens County (now Co. Laois), Ireland; d: 16 January 1825  Quebec.

- ObituaryTimes Picayune (N.O., LA), Sunday, 9 August 1846:  Died, on the 6th instant, at 6 o'clock, A.M., Mrs. Joseph Bowles, at her late residence, in Bienville street, after a brief illness of 16 hours.  She died with the sure and certain prospect of a joyful resurrection.  A funeral discourse, in commemoration of her worth, will be preached at the Poydras street --E church, on this morning, at 11 o'clock, A.M.  The friends are requested to attend.

- Sunday, 25 December 1842, Times Picayune (N.O., LA):  At a meeting of the shoe dealers of the city, they resolved to close their stores on the Sabbath Day, included R.H. Bowles, 21 Royal street

- 17 January 1850 - Petition for Naturalization: New Orleans  - Robert Henry Bowles, subject of G. Britain & Ireland, has resided within the US for more than 5 years; made intention to become citizen on 15 January 1848 and having resided at least 1 year in Louisiana - Granted

- Saturday, 7 February 1852, Times Picayune (N.O., LA):  Removal on account of the late fire.  R.H. Bowles begs leave to inform his friends and the public that he has removed his store from No. 1 Royal street to 55 Canal Street, where he will keep constantly on hand a fine assortment of boots, shoes, trunks, etc., for sale on the most reasonable terms.  His old stock, slightly damaged by water at the late fire, he will dispose of at prices much below first cost.

- Probate 13 May 1854 Mrs. E. A. Bowles:  Petition of Robert H. Bowles applied for letters of tutorship over his only child Henry Taylor Bowles; wife was Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Bowles who died 28 November 1853; Mrs. Charles Ong also appointed as under tutor.  Moveables: fixtures & contents of a boot, shoe & trunk store situated in St. Charles street, between Common & Canal $2000.  Real Estate:  3 Lots - $6800.  Slaves: Negro man Prince about 37, bought from Mrs Jane Marshall 21 March 1846 ($400), griff woman Nancy Barnes about 44 & her son Wesley about 14, bought from Thomas Williams 28 February 1848 ($500) - Total value estate $9700.

- Tuesday, 12 January 1858, Times Picayune (N.O., LA):  Died, January 11th, Henry Taylor Bowles, aged 11 years and 4 months, son of R.H. Bowles and Elizabeth Cook.  His funeral will take place at the residence of his aunt, Mrs. Jane McGaughy, on Thalia street, second door from Apollo, at 4 o'clock this afternoon.

Bowles.  Her funeral will take place from her late residence, 122 Terpsichore street, this (Thursday) evening, at 2 o'clock.  Friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend.

Bowles, deceased: Included 'That eligible brick residence 230 Camp street' (between St. Joseph & Delord); 'The comfortable frame residence 245 Canal street' (between Franklin & Treme streets); 16 valuable lots of ground in the rear of the 1st district (square #11 bounded by Gravier, Common, Cortez & St. John streets) and #32.  Acts of sale before Notary Andrew Hero Jr.

- Probate 8 December 1881, Orleania Bowles:  Petition by E. H. Harris to be the tutor after a family meeting (6 December 1881) in the interest of the minor children was held.  Minor children are: Henry B. Bowles, Stonewall J. Bowles, Thomas A. Bowles & Robert H. Bowles.

- Marriage record: Bowles of Ballick Moyler Queen's Co. farmer & Elizth. Dickson of the Parish of St. Peter Dublin - 25 July 1808.  Dublin, Ireland marriage license index:  John Bowles & Elizabeth Dickson 1808.

- In 1821 Elizabeth Dickson had remarried to Thomas Taylor at Castletown-Killabban, Queen's Co., Ireland.  By 1824, the family had emigrated to Quebec.

- Of the 4 remaining children, Joseph, Jane, and Robert removed to New Orleans.  Joseph & Robert along with their half-sisters Mary and Anna Taylor arrived in New Orleans from Quebec City about 1835.  Jane joined them in the late 1840's.
