COLONEL RICHARDSON'S BODY

To Lie in State at Washington Artillery Arsenal,

Whence the Funeral Will Take Place This Afternoon,

With Military and Veteran Honors.

 

 

Colonel John B. Richardson, of the Washington Artillery, will be buried with all military honors, and as a mark of respect for the service which he has done for the militia of the State, Governor Blanchard and Adjutant General Stafford will both attend the funeral and act as honorary pallbearers. 

 

The body of Colonel Richardson will remain at his home, 1625 Prytania Street, until 7 o'clock this morning.  During this time a guard of honor from the Washington Artillery will remain about the casket.  At 7 o'clock the members of the Washington Artillery will take charge of the body, and will escort it to the armory on St. Charles Street.  Here the body will lie in state until 3 o'clock in the afternoon, when the funeral will take place at the arsenal.  The arsenal has been draped in black, and Kenni's life-size portrait of Colonel Richardson, which was to have been presented to him next week by the members of the Battalion, occupies a position just above the place where the casket will be placed.  During the time that the body lies in state it will be surrounded by a guard of honor of the Battalion. 

 

The honorary pallbearers will be as follows:  Governor Blanchard, General B.T. Stafford, General Albert Estopinal, Albert Baldwin, S.P. Walmsley, J.T. Hayden, Charles Whitney, Page M. Baker, Charles S. Fay, George Q. Whitney, E.B. Kruttschnitt, Sumpter Turner, John Holmes, J.A. Chalaron, C.A. Harris, W.G. Coyle, Frank Howard, Andrew Hero, George Soule, Elmer Wood, William Palfrey, William Pinckard, E.P. Cottraux, M.B. Bergerou, B.F. Eshleman, W.J. Behan, A.R. Blakely, Charles Smith, George W. Nott, John W. Watson, General M. Hodgdon, General Gabe Fillieul.  The funeral sermon will be delivered by the Rev. A. Gordon Bakewell, the Chaplain of the Confederate veterans of Louisiana.  He will be assisted by the Rev. Dr. Wallace Palmer, of the First Presbyterian Church. 

 

Yesterday the Southern Pacific general offices were draped in black in respect to the memory of Colonel Richardson, and an order was issued that both the freight and passenger offices of the Company should be closed between 2 and 4 o'clock today - the time for the funeral.  Mr. Thornwell Fay, the Vice President of the Company, arrived here yesterday afternoon to attend the funeral, and practically all the local employees of the Company of which Colonel Richardson was the Treasurer will attend.  The Southern Pacific will send a very handsome floral design, and the members of the Washington Artillery have arranged to have the badge of their Association reproduced in flowers. 

 

General Stafford has issued an order calling on all the militia organizations of the city to attend the funeral.  The troops are called on to meet at the Washington Artillery Armory at 3 o'clock tomorrow, under command of Captain J.W. BostickCaptain J.W. Bostick has issued an order for the members of the Naval Brigade to assemble at their armory tomorrow at 2 o'clock to attend the funeral in a body.  Similar orders have been issued by the Louisiana Field Artillery, Colonel A. H. Paris.  The casket of Colonel Richardson will lie in state in the Armory from 8 o'clock to 3 o'clock, and all the friends of the family and the members of the various military organizations are asked to be present at the time of the funeral.  The various Confederate bodies, and the Sons of Veterans will participate, and, of course, all the Washington Artillery, both veteran and active.
