Notes for Francis Brittlebank:

Francis' baptism is recorded in the Hathersage registers as: Franciscus, fil. Hugonis Brittlebank de Yate-house.  The reference to Yate House appears to be the following place, taken from 'Farms and Families of Hathersage Outseats, Derbyshire Part II':  The oldest settled dwelling of those grouped near Gatehouse was probably Upper (or Over) Hirst.  A reference to Gatehouse (or to use the old spelling Yatehouse or the Yate) has not been found until 1548.  Gatehouse is first named in 1548 in a deed of Sir Thomas Fitzherbert and Dame Ann his wife (as lord and lady of the manor of Hathersage).  No further mention of Gatehouse has been found until the reign of James I (1613) when Thomas Brittlebank was the tenant there.  Members of the Brittlebank family were at Brookfield and Thorp in Queen Elizabeth's reign so it appears likely that a Brittlebank was already at Gatehouse also.  In 1613 there was a contemporary Thomas Brittlebank (clearly a different man) at Brookfield.  In the mid-1650s the manor and all the farms were sold in separate lots by the Fitzherberts.  The main sales took place in 1654-5 and small yeomen from neighbouring places eagerly bought up the better properties near the village as investments.  The outlying farms were more difficult to dispose of and several were sold to sitting tenants.  Thomas Brittlebank's successor at Gatehouse, another Thomas, was the purchaser of his farm and it is likely that he and his son William Brittlebank built themselves a new farmhouse there.  Thomas and his grandson, another William, both left wills to which are attached full inventories.  Thomas' will, proved 10 April 1665, left the farm to his widow Susannah.
