- Herts & Cambs Reporter & Royston Crow, Friday, 11 October 1878: Communications regarding Typhoid Fever at Great and Little Chishill include comments: A cottage occupied by Henry Thake, labourer, Little Chishill, his wife, Martha, suffering badly from typhoid fever. Another cottage described as remarkably clean and comfortable, Thake's not quite so comfortable, but plenty of room. The Sanitary Inspector used disinfectants and gave the usual precautions to prevent the disease spreading. A certificate had been issued to remove Martha Thake to the Workhouse, but the Master did not consider it his duty to remove infectious patients from outlying parishes (as they could die on the road).
