Misc.:  The Times Democrat (New Orleans, LA), Sunday, 10 September 1899:  Alexandria, La., Sept. 9 - A Remarkable Escape from Death - Willis Pitre a brakeman on the Watkins road, had a remarkable escape from death last night.  On the arrival of the local freight in the Alexandria yards, Pitre attempted to jump from the rear of the locomotive in order to open a switch, when his trousers leg caught on the valve of the air brake, throwing him to the ground in front of the train.  Luckily his fall was noticed by Conductor Eggleston, who instantly gave the signal to stop, but the tank of the engine had already passed over his body and he was only saved by his presence of mind.  Grasping the truss rods under the tender, he drew himself up from the ground, thus escaping being ground to pieces by the heavy train.  When the train was stopped and he was pulled out he was found to have had his right heel badly smashed and a few gashes in his right leg and one in his forehead.  With the exception of a few bruises, he was otherwise uninjured.  He will be moved to his home in Lake Charles.
