Notes for Lena Doris Vondell:

Obituary:  Press Republican (Plattsburgh, NY):  Lena Doris LaShomb, August 15, 2006 - Avondale, Ariz. - Lena Doris LaShomb, 91, formerly of Wall Street, Mineville, N.Y., and most recently of Avondale, Ariz., passed away on July 29, 2006, at the Banner Estrella Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz.  Born on June 5, 1915, in Lawrenceville, N.Y., she was the youngest of eight siblings born to Henry and Violla (Close) Vondell.  In 1933, she graduated from Brushton Central School and went on to work at a local farm.  It was there that she met her husband of 49 years, Seward LaShomb.  Following their marriage in 1938, they moved to Mineville, N.Y., and started their family.  Lena will be remembered most for her willingness to help others and the spirituality she exemplified to all that were fortunate to know her.  Growing up during the Great Depression, she encouraged simplicity over complexity and inspired her family with her wisdom, generosity and independence.  She was loving and encouraging to all.  Lena enjoyed bird watching, gardening, baking and canning.  She was notorious for her doughnuts, breads and pickles.  She particularly enjoyed preparing meals for her family during holiday gatherings.  She was predeceased by her husband Seward; six brothers; and a sister.  She is survived by a daughter, Faith Whitford of Ticonderoga, N.Y.; two sons, Seward LaShomb Jr. of Buckeye, Ariz., and Lowell LaShomb of Chestertown, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Holly Frasier and her husband Darrell of Avondale, Ariz., and James Whitford Jr. and his wife Katie of Ticonderoga, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren, Josh Frasier of Avondale, Ariz., and Kody and Chandler Whitford of Ticonderoga, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral arrangements were with the Buckeye Funeral Home and a family service was held on Aug. 3, 2006, at the family home in Avondale, Ariz.  Burial services will take place at the family plot on a later date to be determined.  Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Moriah Ambulance Squad.
