MISC: The Terrebonne Press (Houma, LA), Tuesday, 3 December 1957: The family of Roland J. Pitre, victim of a shooting accident in California last Thursday, is requesting contributions to help pay for the autopsy and shipping of young Pitre's body from California to Houma, which will amount to $565. Anyone wishing to contribute may do so by sending money or a check to The Houma Courier, 312 School st. Mr. and Mrs. Justillian Pitre of 172 Garnet st. have ten children - five girls aged 8, 9, 10, 14 and 20, and five boys aged 2, 6, 16, 18 and 26. The oldest daughter, Mrs. Nathan Adams, said that her father worked for De Yeide junk yard and makes about $50 dollars a week. "My oldest brother works as a roustabout for Jumbo Construction company, but his job is not regular. He works about once every two weeks for maybe three or four days at a time. His salary is $1.25 an hour, and he gives this to help take care of the family," she explained. Mrs. Adams said her husband was also contributing to the family. He, too, is a roustabout for Jumbo Construction, working on the average of two or three days a week, but he and his wife have a 6-month-old baby to support also. The Pitres and the Adams all live together in a small five-room house.
Obituary: The Courier (Houma, LA), Tuesday, 29 November 1977: Mark Justilian Pitre, a native of Houma and a resident of 312 1/2 Mahler St., died Tuesday, Nov. 29 at the age of 69. Visitation at McCleary-Brignac Funeral Home begins today at 2 p.m. and will continue until 10 p.m., resuming tomorrow, from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Thursday, from 8 a.m. until funeral time. A rosary will be recited Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, followed by interment in the St. Francis No. 2 Cemetery. He was the husband of Mrs. Josephine Anges Pitre. Roland Joseph Pitre: The Terrebonne Press (Houma, LA), Tuesday, 3 December 1957: (photo) Funeral services are scheduled for the latter part of this week for 21-year-old roustabout Roland Joseph Pitre of 172 Garnet st., who was accidentally shot and killed Thursday in California by his friend, James R. Holland, also of Houma. Chauvin Funeral home will arrange services, with interment at Magnolia cemetery. Pitre and his bride of less than two weeks, Gloria LeBoeuf Pitre of 225 Hellier st., were out west on their honeymoon. Holland, 28, suffered a heart condition just after the shooting and was taken to the county hospital. He became hysterical when telling police of the accident. Friday night he remained in a state of collapse. Pitre and Holland were cleaning a loaded gun, a .22-caliber German Luger, in preparation for a hunting trip which the two men and their wives were to take following Thanksgiving dinner. The gun was coated with grease and oil, as Holland tried the lower the half-cocked hammer. His finger slipped and pulled the trigger, shooting his friend, who was rushed to the hospital and died later that day, at 3:55 p.m. from an internal hemorrhage. Place of the shooting was not held clear, but according to Pitre's sister, Mrs. Nathan Adams it took place in Arlington, California, a community of about 35,000 population, where the Pitres and the Hollands were sharing living quarters. Louis Broussard, director of Chauvin Funeral home here, spoke to the director of the funeral home in Arlington, said that Pitre died in a hospital in Riverside, a slightly larger community of 46,754 which lies about 50 miles east of Los Angeles. The body is being held at Powell Mortuary there, and following an autopsy and further investigation it is to be released and sent to Houma. It is not expected to arrive here before Thursday, however. Riverside deputy coroner William Dykes believes the shooting was accidental. Pitre and his bride, 14 years old, had eloped to Mississippi and were married November 16, according to the girl's mother, Mrs. Vergus LeBoeuf. Mrs. Pitre was out of the room at the time of the shooting and ran in as she heard the shot. "I loved him so," she said. "I met him about four or five months ago in Houma. I was in the ninth grade and he was an oil field worker." Said Mrs. Pitre, "We drove to Woodville, Mississippi, got married, and then drove with the Hollands to California. We didn't want to let our parents know about it, but we finally wrote them without telling them where we were. We just told them we were married." According to Mrs. LeBoeuf, the couple went to Thibodaux for one day, then left with the Hollands for California. It is believed that another couple, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Holloway, accompanied the Pitres and the Hollands to California, but information about this was still sketchy by news deadline. Holloway was a pusher for the Central Excavation company in Thibodaux and had hired Pitre and Holland to work under him as roustabouts. Pitre and Holland were with the company only a short time. The three of them all quit about two weeks ago. The newlywed Pitres planned to return to Houma as soon as they could make enough money to pay the fare. Mrs. Pitre told that Holland had rented two trucks and he and her husband were planning on going into the hauling business, carrying fruits and vegetables to market. Pitre's family received the news of this death about 7 p.m. Thursday. He was the second oldest of 11 children. He attended West Park and Houma Elementary schools. Besides his widow, Pitre's survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Justillian Pitre, of 172 Garnet; five brothers Harry, Eugene, Henry, Michael and Terry, and five sisters, Mrs. Nathan Adams, Gayle, Matilda, Linda and Brenda, of the same address.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda Conway Pitre; daughter, Misty Pitre; grandson, MJ Real; parents, Justillian Pitre and Lena Bergeron Pitre; grandparents, Edgard Bergeron, Mathilda Dugas, Willie Pitre and Julia Pitre; brothers, Henry "Billy" Pitre, Jr., Harry "Two-Two" Pitre, Eugene Pitre, Terry Pitre, and Roland Pitre; sisters, Betty Pitre Porter, Linda Hyde and Gayle Dardar. Michael was blessed to have many loved ones here on earth and in heaven. In Lieu of flowers donations to help with funeral expenses.
