Obituaries for the children:

Floyd Leon Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Tuesday, 24 June 1969:  The man in the blue uniform of the U.S. Air Force, master sergeant's stripes on his sleeve and three rows of campaign ribbons over his heart, spoke quietly and sincerely of the man whose body lay in a casket in the next room.  "He was the most dedicated, patriotic soldier, I have known in my 19 years of military service."  Master Sgt. James U. Martin Jr., a native of Florida, was delivering his personal eulogy to Army Sgt. First Class Floyd L. Pitre of Lawtell Monday afternoon as he talked to a Daily World reporter at Lafond and Son Funeral Home here.  Sgt Pitre, 37, had only 80 days to go on his one-year tour of duty in Vietnam when he was killed.  He died June 11 in a vicious attack by the North Vietnamese on a U.S. artillery base in the foothills 30 miles south of Da Nang, South Vietnam.  News services described the battle as the "bitterest" of three launched by the Hanoi Vietnamese during the early morning hours of June 11.  Eleven Americans were killed; 32 were wounded.  Sgt Pitre was one of the dead.  According to news reports, the North Vietnamese struck the base, which sits astride a key enemy infiltration route to the south, at 2 am.  Sappers, known as demolition experts, hit the base armed with flame throwers and dynamite bombs.  They broke through the outer perimeter and reached the base, defended by 150 U.S. troops, under a 70-round mortar barrage before pulling back.  Sgt. Pitre of Lawtell was one of those 150 members of the U.S. 196th Light Infantry Brigade defending the vital base.  He died there.  His body arrived home Sunday night.  Last rites will be held at 3pm Wednesday in St Bridget Catholic Church in Lawtell, with burial in the church cemetery.  As a member of the service, full military rites will be accorded Sgt. Pitre.  A contingent of soldiers from Ft. Polk will be in attendance as honor guard.  A Catholic chaplain, a captain in the Army, from Ft. Polf will assist the St. Bridget priest in conducting the service.

Sgt Martin, stating firmly that the Lawtell soldier was his military "buddy" even though they were in different branches of the service, said he had known Sgt. Pitre since 1953.  His wife and Sgt. Pitre's, a native of the Philippines, are first cousins.  They met through this relationship.  Through the vagaries of the military, they served together at a missile base in Abilene, TX, and again in Germany.  It was from Germany that Sgt Pitre was sent to Vietnam.  Sgt. Martin is presently stationed with the 37 72nd Instructors Squadron, Air Technical Training Center, Wichita Falls, TX.  He has just returned form a tour of duty in the Middle East.  Labeling Sgt Pire as a "professional soldier", Sgt Martin pointed out that the Lawtell serviceman had "many accomplishments for himself and the service".  Sgt Pitre was an expert with a rifle, serving as captain of a rifle team that garnered many medals and citations.  Sgt Pitre was the top man in his call at the Non-Commissioned Officers Academy in Germany in 1966, and had passed and had been accepted for the Army Warrant Officer Program which would mean officer's rank, when he was killed.  He held the Army commendation Medal for "continuous and superior performance of duties," in addition to a number of other military service-connected awards.  "I had a colonel tell me one day that the reason one unit had received so many awards and citations was because of Sgt. Pitre's leadership," Martin said.  "I've seen generals stop Floyd to talk to him.  When they didn't pay attention to anyone else.  He was that sort of guy; he had a personality that appealed to everyone".  Pitre entered the service Nov 1, 1952.  He had been in Vietnam since September of 1968.  He is survived by his wife, the former Caridade Maestrado, formerly of the Philippines, whom he met while serving at Ft. Benning, Ga; his mother, Mrs. Alix J. Pitre of Lawtell; two sisters, Mrs. John Vandergriff of Opelousas and Mrs. Charles Breaux of Lawtell; three brothers, Bobby G. Pitre of Opelousas, George U. Pitre, of Mire and Lafayette, and Ronald Pitre of Baton Rouge.
