Joseph Kenneth Lajambe:  The Sault Star (Sault Ste. Marie, ONT), Saturday, 16 March 2013:  (photo)  A Medal of Merit recipient who pushed the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre and Ontario Winter Carnival Bon Soo to new heights is dead.  Ken Lajambe died Thursday at Sault Area Hospital.  He was 86.  The Second World War veteran suffered two strokes in recent weeks, said his son Dan.  "He was always a very positive guy," he said on Friday.  "No matter what type of adversity came his way, he always found some way of putting a positive spin on it."  Lajambe's contributions to the community were many and wide-ranging.  He helped raise $1 million towards construction of a new downtown arena, now known as Essar Centre, that opened in 2006.  Lajambe was a school trustee for both the public and Catholic school boards in Sault Ste. Marie for about 20 years.  Tourism Sault Ste. Marie recognized him as volunteer of the year in 2004.  He was president of Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce in 1991 when Algoma Steel sought bankruptcy protection.  Lajambe dedicated full-time hours to the part-time position.  His goal was to help Sault businesses keep their doors open while the steel-maker struggled.  Lajambe counselled confidence in Algoma's future.  "There's not too many things Ken didn't have his hand in," said George Mersereau, past Chair of the bushplane museum's board of directors.  When people sought his advice on a community project, such as a hockey tournament, Lajambe would step up and play an active role, says his son.  "My dad would say, 'You know what?  Let me give you a hand.'"  Lajambe earned his private pilot's licence in the mid-1970s.  He began volunteering with Sault Search and Rescue in 1973.  Lajambe used his plane - he owned three over the roughly 20 years he flew - to do grid searches for missing anglers and hunters.  He'd also ferry family and friends to an outpost camp on Tribble Lake, northeast of the Mekatina Crossing on the Algoma Central Railway line to hunt and fish.  It was Lajambe, who as president of the Bon Soo winter carnival in 1984, landed provincial funding to help the event become a tourist destination.  The deal included a provision that the celebration of winter fun be rebranded Ontario Winter Carnival Bon Soo, the name it still holds.  "He really did start that vision, I think, of us becoming a tourism driver," said carnival manager Kerrie De Poli.  Lajambe joined other Bon Soo leaders, including founder Henry Bullock and Donna Gregg, in a short video produced in January to mark the carnival's 50th anniversary in 2013.  Lajambe was "right on top of it" when he appeared for filming, says De Poli.  Director Ryan Byrne of Absolute Complete Entertainment wore an Abercrombie T-shirt.  "Where's Fitch?" asked Lajambe, referring to the American retailer that makes clothing for young adults.  He was also a key player in the development of the bushplane museum.  Lajambe was chair of the centre's board of directors in 1997-98 and served on the board for at least 10 years, said executive director Mike Delfre.  "He's a big loss to us," said Delfre.  "(He's) the kind of guy you never replace these days with the way things are going in the not-for-profit world.  Everybody's getting older."  Lajambe saw both the museum and Bon Soo struggle, says his son.  He wanted to increase their stature to the provincial level so they'd qualify for more financial support from the Ontario government.  "I know he was so proud about the Bon Soo thing," said Dan.  "It was just struggling along.  No funding.  All of a sudden the carnival changed its size."  The father of three received the city's highest honour, the Medal of Merit, in 2003.  He received his award from the late Mayor John Rowswell.  Lajambe chaired Rowswell's successful campaign to lead the city in 2000.  Receiving the medal, said his son Dan, "was one of the proudest moments in his life."  "He was proud of John Rowswell," he said.  "Boy, that was his proudest moment to have John bestow honour on him."  Rowswell was still in office when he died of cancer in 2010.  Lajambe was a native of Franz, located 315 kilometres north of Sault Ste. Marie.  He worked with Canadian Pacific Railway before enlisting in the Canadian army in 1943, said his younger brother, Frank.  Lajambe served two years in British Columbia before returning to the railway.  He moved to the Sault in 1950 to be with his family.  Lajambe joined Algoma Steel and rose through the ranks.  He was trained as an electrician and served as maintenance supervisor and general foreman before retiring as maintenance superintendent in the mid-1980s.  Lajambe is survived by his special friend, June Conway, his children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  Visitation is at Northwood Funeral Home on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m., and Tuesday from 11 a.m. until a service in the chapel at 1 p.m.  A social follows at the bushplane museum.
