Joan Elizabeth Peters:  Detroit Free Press (Detroit, MI), Saturday, 8 April 2000:  Joan Radeke: Musician played the home stage:  Long before others began advocating that classical music be issued to new mothers to improve their babies' brain development, Joan Elizabeth Radeke would lull her five children to sleep by playing such works on the piano in the parlor of her Grand Rapids home.  "She used to play Mozart and boogie-woogie," said Mrs. Radeke's son, Mark Radeke.  "Then there were the light and pretty sonatinas - that's the kind of stuff we listened to at night."  Mrs. Radeke, a Grand Rapids resident who died Thursday of congestive heart failure at age 72, believed in spiritual and healing powers of music even as her health deteriorated in recent years.  "It was really cool.  At. St. Mary's hospital she played sonatinas for the patients on a piano in the patient lounge," her son said.  "She'd take her wheelchair down there and play for five minutes or so.  The patients really loved it."  Born Joan Peters in Detroit, Mrs. Radeke attended schools in Detroit and East Lansing before graduating from Marywood Academy in Grand Rapids.  She attended Aquinas College and earned degrees in voice and piano from Michigan State University in 1950.  Mark Radeke said his mother won the national Horace Heidt award singing light opera and oratorios after college, but chose not to perform in New York.  Instead, she married Jerome Radeeke and became a well-regarded church organist for several Catholic churches in the Grand Rapids area.  Concerned about morality and ethics, Mrs. Radeke helped found Citizens for Decent Literature in Grand Rapids in the early 1960s, and worked to foster dialogues between the Roman Catholics in Grand Rapids and members of the Christian Reformed Church.  She retired from playing organ at church liturgies in 1974, having done thousands of weddings, funerals and Sunday masses.  Besides her son, survivors include her daughters, Maureen Messink, Kathleen Radeke and Sheila Anne Herrington; sisters Mary Jo Hopper and Kathleen Fuller, and four grandchildren.  Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Arsulowicz Brothers Funeral Home.  A funeral mass will be offered at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Grand Rapids.
