Obituary: Lexington Leader (KY), Friday, 14 August 1936: Indiana Man Killed on way to Hanging - Owensboro, Ky., Aug. 14 - Leonard R. Peters, 35, of Evansville, Ind. was killed in an automobile accident near here early today while enroute with his wife and another couple to see the hanging of Rainey Bethea, Negro. Mrs. Carl Pierson of Detroit was cut and bruised on the head but after her injuries had been dressed at the Owensboro City Hospital she left for Evansville with her husband and Mrs. Peters. Miss Pauline Kaelin, night supervisor of the hospital, said the survivors gave her no details of the accident and that she did not know their street addresses. Coroner Delbert Glenn said they would be summoned back here for an inquest.
Detroit Free Press, Wednesday, 19 August 1936: Leonard Peters - Funeral services for Leonard Peters, former Detroit resident who had been working at the Evansville (Ind.) branch of the Briggs Manufacturing Co. for the last 18 months, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the William H. Cavanagh & Son Parlors, 100 W. Kirby Ave. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Peters was killed Friday when an automobile in which he was riding overturned near Evansville. He formerly lived on Westphalia Ave. in Detroit and was 37 years old. His wife Gertrude and a daughter, Shirley, survive.

Obituary: The Greenville News (SC), Tuesday, 18 October 1988: Gertrude Jones: Anderson - Gertrude E. Hall Peters Jones, 82, of Anderson, died Oct. 17, 1988, at Anderson Health Care Center. She was a retired employee of the Chrysler Corp. and a member of Central Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Robert "Bob" (Shirley Peters) Thomas of Anderson; and two stepdaughters, Barbara Jones Wherry of Chalfont, Pa., and Janice Jones Carr of Brighton, Mich. The body has been sent to Clyne Funeral Home, East Detroit, Mich., for funeral services and burial. The McDougald Funeral Home, Anderson, was in charge of local arrangements.

Shirley Faye Peters: Lansing State Journal (MI), Sunday, 19 February 2012: Shirley Faye Thomas, Grand Ledge, 82, passed away Friday, Feb. 17, 2012. Shirley was born in Detroit, Michigan the daughter of Leonard and Gertrude (Hall) Peters. Shirley retired from Michigan State University after 13 years of service. Shirley enjoyed needlework, cross stitching and going on many cruises with her husband Robert. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend will be dearly missed by all. Shirley was preceded in death by two infant sons Richard and Donald and her husband of 61 years Robert. She is survived by her children Robert (Diane) Thomas III, Ken (Sheryl) Thomas, Steve (Michelle Loren) Thomas. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. The Funeral Liturgy will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Gerard Catholic Church with Deacon Jim Corder officiating. Inurnment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. A Memorial Gathering will be held Thursday, 4-6 p.m. at the Palmer Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Delta Chapel, 6020 W. Saginaw and 1 hour before the service Friday at the church. In memory of Shirley, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice Advantage, Lansing, MI.
