Obituary:  Rutland Herald (VT), Friday, 2 May 2003 - Bennington:  William Peat Sr., 87, a former resident of Port Orange, Fla., died May 2, 2003, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center.  Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.  There will be no calling hours.  Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Bennington County, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, Bennington.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

- Mr. William Peat Sr., 87, a longtime resident of Bennington and a former resident of Port Orange, Fla., died Friday morning, May 2, 2003 at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.  He was born May 3, 1915 in Lachine, Canada and he grew up in North Adams, Mass.  He was a decorated World War II veteran, serving in the United States Navy with the Pacific fleet on the U. S. S. Randolph as an original plank owner.  He received the Purple Heart for wounds incurred when a Japanese suicide plane attacked his ship.  He was a lifetime member of the American Legion in North Adams.  Mr. Peat married the former Lillian Scott in May 30, 1938.  As a youth he was an avid wrestler for the YMCA in North Adams.  Mr. Peat was originally employed at Quinns Wallpaper and Paint Store in North Adams for a period of 28 years, prior to his move to Bennington in 1959.  In Bennington he became co-owner of C. L. White’s Paint and Glass Company until his retirement in October of 1976.  He was a loving and affectionate husband and generous provider to his family and his community.  He will be remembered for his strong will, his caring and his sense of humor.  Survivors include his wife, a son, a daughter, five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two sisters.

Obituary:  Rutland Herald (VT), Monday, 24 May 2004 - Bennington:  Lillian I. Peat, 91, died May 24, 2004, at Crescent Manor Care Centers.  She was born Jan. 10, 1913, in Adams, Mass., the daughter of Charles and Agnes (Smith) Scott.  She received her education in Adams.  She married William Peat Sr. on May 30, 1938, in Adams.  He died in 2003.  Mrs. Peat was a member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church.  She enjoyed gardening and walks with her husband.  Survivors include a son, William Peat Jr. of Bennington; a daughter, Mary Barber of Bennington; a brother, Norman Scott of Florida; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was predeceased by 16 siblings.  A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.  Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Bennington County Inc., through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home,  Bennington.
