MISC:  Ogdensburg Republican Journal (NY), 28 December 1931:  Winthrop, Dec. 28 - James, six year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lashomb of Brasher Center had a narrow escape from drowning in the St. Lawrence river, near his home on Saturday, Dec. 18.  He was sliding on the ice with his brother, Lawrence, when his sled broke through the thin ice and he went into the water.  He managed to get hold of firm ice and pulled himself to safety.  He walked home, well drenched, but seems no worse for the cold ducking.  His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lashomb, celebrated their golden wedding, May 19.

Obituaries for the children:

Duane Robert Lashomb:  Watertown Daily Times (Watertown, NY), Saturday, 15 June 2002:  Brasher Falls - A town of Brasher man who was the third leg in a love triangle came within inches of death in a deadly ambush Thursday, according to state police.  A bullet passed through Eric J. Schantz's shirt as he tried unsuccessfully to save the life of his girlfriend, Leslie A. Shadle, troopers said.  She died after being hit twice by high-powered rifle bullets fired by former boyfriend Duane R. LaShomb, 72 Pike Road, Brasher, they said.  Ms. Shadle, 49, broke off a 13-year relationship with LaShomb, 52, in February, state police and neighbors said.  Mr. Schantz, 41, moved into her mobile home at 889 W. Mahoney Road about two months ago, they said.  "It appears that Duane was lying in ambush across the road, waiting for them to come home," said Capt. Bruce C. Dunning, head of the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Ray Brook.  Armed with a pump action 30-06 caliber Remington model 760 Game Master rifle, LaShomb fired at the couple as they walked toward the Shadle home about 10:05 p.m., Mr. Dunning said.  The first round hit Ms. Shadle in the right leg, he said.  "Mr. Schantz attempted to help her around the trailer, out of the line of fire," Mr. Dunning said.  As he did, LaShomb pursued the couple, he said.  Ms. Shadle was fatally wounded by a second round that entered her torso as she and Mr. Schantz reached a small porch that served as the mobile home's entrance, Mr. Dunning said.  Mr. Schantz bent over Ms. Shadle and a round passed through his shirt without striking him, the investigator said.  He managed to get inside and call the county's 911 emergency dispatch center for help.  LaShomb fled into woods behind the house and committed suicide on a small earthen berm, Mr. Dunning said.  His body was found about three hours after the shooting.  Neighbors said that since his break-up with Ms. Shadle, LaShomb sold equipment associated with his small trucking business and stalked her.  "Whether he had planned to do this or take his own life, we are not sure," Mr. Dunning said.  "We do know he sold off a lot of his possessions and paid off some debts."  Ms. Shadle was born Dec. 31, 1952, in Pottsville, Pa., daughter of Lester and Grace M. Sell Leh.  She married Gary Shadle on April 27, 1971, in Pine Grove, Pa.  The marriage ended in divorce.  Ms. Shadle was a bus driver for Massena Central School.  She was a member of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) chapter 272 of Massena; Amvets Auxiliary and Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club, all of Brasher.  She enjoyed line dancing.  Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Les and Danielle Shadle, Massena, and Scott Shadle, Plattsburgh; a stepdaughter and her husband, Denise and Jim Felty, Pine Grove, and three grandchildren.  A daughter, Stacy, died in infancy in 1973.  A memorial service for Ms. Shadle will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, with the Rev. Robert Graham, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, Massena, officiating.  Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Pine Grove.  Calling hours will be 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.  Donations may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.  LaShomb was born Dec. 2, 1949, in Massena, son of James W. and Beatrice E. Rockwood LaShomb.  He was a 1969 graduate of St. Lawrence Central School and took machine trade courses through St. Lawrence-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services.  He had been an equipment operator for Hoot Owl Enterprises Inc., Massena, since 1990.  He owned and operated his own trucking and excavation business for many years.  A marriage to Deborah Gibson on Sept. 11, 1971, ended in divorce.  Surviving are two sons, Jeff Guyette, Massena, and Gerald LaShomb, Winthrop; a daughter and a son-in-law, Micheline and Jay McCarthy, Brasher Falls; a sister, Brenda 'Bonnie' Pecore, Massena; a brother, Gerald, Norfolk; three grandchildren, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.  A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m., Monday at St. Patrick's Church with the Rev. Clark White officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  There will be no public calling hours.  Donations may be made to Alcoholics Anonymous.
