Obituary:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Monday, 14 October 1985:  Funeral services for Lawrence J. Pitre, 76, were to be held at 3 p.m. today in St. Landry Roman Catholic Church here with burial in the church cemetery.  Mr. Pitre, a retired farmer of Plaisance, died at 9 p.m. Saturday in Opelousas General Hospital after a long illness.  Survivors include his wife, the former Leona Hargroder of Plaisance; three sons, Eugene Pitre of West Minister, S.C., John Rufus Pitre of Opelousas and J. L. Pitre of Plaisance; a daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Jane) Dupre of Plaisance; two brothers, Gervis and Emery Pitre, both of Plaisance; two sisters, Mrs. Edna Lafleur and Mrs. Verby Pitre, both of Ville Platte; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas is directing.

Obituary:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Tuesday, 27 December 1994:  Funeral services for Mrs. Leona Hargroder Pitre, 79, at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas with burial in the church cemetery.  Mrs. Pitre, a resident of Opelousas, died at 5:05 p.m. Monday, December 26, in Opelousas General Hospital.  Survivors include: three sons, Joseph L. Pitre Jr. of Plaisance, Eugene Pitre of Westminster, S.C., and John Rufus Pitre of Plaisance; a daughter, Mrs. Merele (Jane) Dupre of Plaisance; a sister, Mrs. Kirby (Verlie) Dupre of Opelousas; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.  Visiting hours are from 4-10 p.m. today, from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 a.m. Thursday until time of services.  A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday.  Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Lawrence Pitre:  Plaisance - Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at a 2:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Heart Chapel in Belaire Cove for Joseph 'J.L.' Pitre, age 78, who passed away Saturday, May 23, 2020 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Ville Platte.  Interment will be in Belaire Cove Cemetery in Belaire Cove.  J. L. was a native and lifelong resident of Plaisance.  He loved hunting, camping and horseback riding.  An extremely hard worker, he worked as a contractor building homes and then was a sales representative at Service Builders for many years after being a horse trainer in his youth.  When there was work to be done, Boss Man was all business.  He was serious and completely straightforward when it came to getting important things done.  A true family man, he was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, great grandpa, son, brother and friend.  He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, having a good time, and being with his kids, grand kids, and great grand kids.  His family will miss him dearly.  Survivors include one son, Bennett Pitre and wife, Karlene, of Plaisance; two daughters, Paula Lagrange and husband, Doyle, of Opelousas, Millie Johnson and husband, Jody, of Prairie Rhonde; seven grandchildren, Gavin Tyler Ardoin, Chelsey Nicole Johnson Duvall, Hunter Joseph Johnson, Lacey Brooke Pitre, Jarrett Bennett Pitre, Jesse Lagrange, Joshua Lagrange; eight great grandchildren, Lilith Lagrange, Brookelynn Lachapelle, Jaylee Johnson, Abelyn Blace Pitre, Evie-Roe Pitre, Cade Duvall, Josh Lagrange II, Oliver Lagrange; one brother, John Rufus Pitre and wife, Suzzane, of Plaisance; one sister, Jane Dupre of Plaisance; one godchild, Kathy Latiolais; and host of nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Rowena Ann Fontenot Pitre; his parents, Joseph Lawrence Pitre and the former Leona Hargroder; two brothers, Eugene Pitre and his wife Francis, Derrell Pitre; and one brother-in-law, Raymond Dupre.  A rosary will be prayed at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.  The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 7:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday.  Pallbearers will be Danny Pitre, Mike Duvall, Hunter Johnson, Daniel Brown, Mitchell Brown and Jody Johnson.  Honorary pallbearers will be Doyle Lagrange, Bennett Pitre and Jarrett Pitre.  The family would like to extend special thanks to Heart of Hospice for their care and attention. Eugene Pitre:  Anderson Independent Mail (Anderson, SC), Saturday, 7 February 1998:  Westminster, S.C. - The Rev. Eugene Pitre, 55, of 2820 North Jenkins Bridge Road, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at the V. A. Hospital in Asheville, N.C.  Born in Opelousas, La., he was a Charter member of the New Testament Holiness Church and had served as pastor of the New Testament Holiness Church in Westminster for 16 years.  He was a former building contractor in Brownwood, Texas, and former Rancher in Arizona.  He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during Vietnam.  Surviving are widow, Frances Stamper Pitre of the home; sons, Bill Overby of California, George Overby of North Dakota, Daniel Adam Pitre of Portmouth, Ohio, Mark Damon Pitre of the home, and Randall R. Zellers of Renselear, Ind., daughter, Rhonda Lynn Ludemann of Applewood, Minn.; brothers, Joseph Lawrence and John Rufus Pitre of Opelousas, La.; a sister, Jane Dupre of Louisiana; and 10 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Lawrence and Leona Hargruder Pitre.  Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sandifer Funeral Home, Westminster, by the Rev. Leon Anderson, the Rev. David Terrell and the Rev. Ronnie White; burial will be in Heritage Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.  The family will be at the home.  Flowers are accepted.  The family suggests that memorials may be made to the New Testament Holiness Church, Westminster, S.C.

Derrail James Pitre:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Monday, 1 July 1974:  Ville Platte Mishap Kills 2, Injures 1 - Ville Platte - Two men were killed and another received serious injuries Sunday around 2:30 a.m. when the vehicle in which they were traveling failed to negotiate a curve on Hwy. 167 and ran off the road, according to information received by the Evangeline Parish sheriff's office.  Killed in the mishap were Lee Wayne Fontenot, 32, of Rt. 4, Ville Platte and Derral James Pitre, 20, of Plaisance, lawmen reported.  Edna Fontenot, 18, a passenger of Rt. 1, Ville Platte, received serious injuries.  She was taken to Ville Platte General Hospital, according to the sheriff's office.  According to the reports, the car was approaching Ville Platte when it failed to negotiate a curve near Cleve's Restaurant, jumped a ditch, struck a utility pole and came to rest against some heavy equipment in a welding yard.  The car was believed to have been traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the mishap, according to police reports......Funeral services for Pitre are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday in the St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas.  Burial will follow in the St. Landry Cemetery with arrangements being handled by Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas.  A rosary will be said at the funeral home at 8 p.m. today.  Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Pitre; three brothers, J. L. Pitre and John Pitre, both of Plaisance; Eugene Pitre of Texas; and one sister, Mrs. Raymond Dupre of Plaisance.
