Boating Incident: The Sault Star (ONT), Tuesday, 11 October 1977: Three Michigan residents who drowned when their boat capsized on Northwind Lake near Chapleau, Ont., 160 kilometres northeast of Sault Ste. Marie, were among at least 73 persons who died accidentally in Canada during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.....in Chapleau, three Michigan residents were drowned Sunday when their rowboat was swamped while crossing North Wind Lake, about 80 kilometres southwest of here. The Chapleau detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police have recovered the body of Renee Peters, 38, of St. Clair Shores and are searching for the bodies of her brother-in-law Harold Peters, 35, and his wife Martha, 29, of Royal Oak. An OPP spokesman said the three, along with Renee's husband James, 41, were crossing the lake at 8 p.m. to a portage when water began coming into the front end of the boat and swamped it. Police said they believe James Peters who survived was the only one wearing a life jacket. All four hung onto the boat for an hour before they started dropping off.....James Peters made it to shore and spent the night in the bush. In the morning, he found the rowboat and crossed the lake to safety and reported the incident to the police.
