Norman G. Peters: Portland Press Herald (Portland, ME), Thursday, 22 January 2004: Windham - Norman Peters was a regular. He loved nothing more than going to one of his favorite restaurants - Governor's Restaurant in South Portland or Valle's Steak House in Portland - to catch up with an old friend or to chat with a waitress. Mr. Peters, who died Tuesday at age 75, sought enjoyment from the simple things in life. His stepdaughter, Nancy LaFleur, of Gray, said he loved being around people. She described him as a happy and easygoing person. She said he loved to share in conversation and laughter over a meal. When he could, he recruited someone in his family to accompany him. "It was one of his favorite things to do," said LaFleur. "He loved spending time with people. He knew everyone. Wherever we went, I'd ofter hear, 'Hey Norm!'" Mr. Peters, formerly of Pierce Street in Westbrook, was one of eight children. He grew up in Westbrook and went to local schools. He entered the Army and served for two years. After his discharge, he wanted to pursue a new opportunity and moved to Pasadena, Calif., where he lived for 10 years. He fell on hard times, and moved back to Maine in the 1960s. "He went to California to see if there were greener pastures," said his sister, Theresa Dyer, of Limington. Dyer described her brother as quiet, independent and protective. "He never wanted us to go out of our way for him. He was a good man. If my siblings had problems, he was concerned and helpful like a good brother should be," said Dyer. Mr. Peters worked for General Electric Co. in South Portland. When the company closed in the early 1980s, he took a job as a custodian for the Westbrook School Department and worked there for about 10 years. "He liked spending time with the staff and enjoyed seeing the kids in the hallways," LaFleur said. "The job was a good fit for him. He made friends wherever he went." In 1976, Mr. Peters married the former Rejane Boisvert. He was a devoted family man. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan and enjoyed watching the games with his grandson, Adam Boisvert, of Westbrook. LaFleur said her mother and stepfather had a great relationship. "He worshipped the ground she walked on," LaFleur said. "He was a nice guy. He was great to us and wonderful with my children. My kids don't know any other grandfather but him." Mr. Peters and his wife were married for 19 years. She died in 1995. They enjoyed going on short trips with friends throughout New England and loved going out to eat. Mr. Peters and his wife also traveled to Las Vegas several times. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to: The American Cancer Society, Topsham, ME.
