MISC: Clarion News (Opelousas, LA), Thursday, 30 August 1934: Five merrymakers were seriously injured, with the probability of one dying, last Wednesday night at a brawl near Vidrine Dance Hall near Ville Platte. Two brothers, Carlton and Luke Pitre, returning from the dance, were shot by Adam Lafleur, allegedly engaged as liquor agent for the proprietor of the dive. According to testimony given by the Pitre brothers, trouble arose at Vidrine's dance hall between some Delafosse brothers and their own party. With them was another brother, Jean Batiste Pitre. When the Pitre brothers left the hall, they noticed the Delafosse brothers and Adam Lafleur following them at a comfortable distance. The pursued noticed that the other party was heavily armed. After walking about twenty paces, just on the bridge dividing St. Landry and Evangeline parish, Lafleur opened fire at the retreating Pitre brothers. Carlton crumpled, reeled and fell to the ground. Luke Pitre, staggered under the fire and fell near his brother. The third brother, yet unscratched, rushed to his nearby buggy, and pulling out a shotgun, started shooting at the now retreating Delafosses and Lafleur. He landed a few shots in the backs of his assailants but did no great damage. Rushed to the local sanitarium in Ville Platte, the Pitres were found to be severely injured, one was found to be in a decidedly critical condition with little hope to survive. One pellet had narrowly missed his heart, doctors said. Jules Vidrine, former constable and proprietor of the dance hall, gives a different version of the affair. He contends that the dance broke at twelve and that the shooting occurred at 2:30. In bed at the time, he immediately went to the scene of the shooting which he claims was at the Petit Passe bridge, where he learned that the Pitre brothers had been lying in wait for the other party. He claims he was reliably informed that the Pitres were the aggressors and that they waited for the Delafosses. The latter turned around and went to get Adam Lafleur and then returned to the bridge. No charges were filed by any of the injured parties and as yet no arrests had been made since officials deemed it improper since no formal charges had been made. The father of the injured Pitre brothers said that he had forbidden his sons to go to the place.
