Misc:  The Lewiston Daily Sun (Lewiston, ME), Monday, 12 January 1953:  Boat Explodes, Sinks at Boothbay Harbor.  Defective Bottled Gas Line Blamed; Three Escape Serious Injury.  Boothbay Harbor, Jan. 11 - Three persons aboard a 38-foot fishing boat escaped with minor injuries today when the vessel blew up and sank at a dock.  Treated at a hospital for minor cuts and burns were the craft's skipper, Philip Newcomb, 26, Miss Rita Garvey, 28, of Watertown, Mass., and Leo Peters, 13.  The explosion shook the entire waterfront of this coastal summer resort.  Newcomb said the blast occurred as he tried to light a newly installed gas stove.  He attributed the mishap to a defective bottled gas line.

 

Obituaries for the children:

Theresa Marie Peters:  T. Marie McLellan, 82, died January 18th at Edgecomb Green in Edgecomb.  She was born January 20, 1931 in Boothbay Harbor to Joseph C. Peters, Sr. and Irene Newcomb Peters.  Marie grew up in Boothbay Harbor and attended local schools.  She lived in Gloucester, MA for several winters.  Marie was happiest when she was cooking and was a student of her mother, Irene, and became a teacher to countless others.  She cooked with her mother at Irene’s Restaurant, Lobster Loft for Clem Brewer and for several other restaurants in the Boothbay Region.  She was also a homemaker, raising her family.  She was chaplain and president of the Charles E. Sherman, Jr. American Legion Post #36, and was a member of the V.F.W. Auxilliary.  She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace.  Marie loved to cook, read, crafting, and writing poetry.  She had four of her poems published.  She was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph Cyril Peters, Jr. and Patrick Peters and by a sister, Betty Begin.  She is survived by her son, Richard McLellan and his wife Tracy of Bellingham, WA and Westport Island, ME and grandchildren, Samantha McLellan of Boothbay Harbor, Jeremy McLellan of Boothbay, Hannah McLellan Farnham of Boothbay, Benjamin McLellan of Ambler, PA, Lila Ferne McLellan of Bellingham, WA and Westport Island, ME; and five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; brother, Leo Peters of Boothbay Harbor, Richard Peters of FL, sister, Sharon Begin of Boothbay Harbor and, several nieces and nephews.  Friends are welcome to join the family for a time of visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. January 25th at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay.  A service to celebrate Marie’s life will be held 1 p.m. January 26th at Simmons, Harrington & Hall.  Should friends desire, contributions in Marie’s memory may be made to Edgecomb Green, 31 Cross Point Road, Edgecomb, ME 04556.  Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay.  Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Boothbay, Maine.

 

Joseph Cyril Peters:  Sun Journal (Lewiston, ME), Friday, 30 January 1953:  One Trawler Found, Second Still Missing.  Boothbay Harbor -  (Information about missing boats)  Still sought was the 36-foot Kit which was seen near the Sandra and Earl early Wednesday morning.  Aboard the two boats were: Weston Pinkham, 30; John Begin, 29; Louis Durfee, 65, Cyril Peters, Jr., 21, Oliver Newcomb, 42, and his brother, Philip, 28...... The Sandra & Earl and the Kit went trawling together from Boothbay Harbor Tuesday night.  A blustery southeaster swept the coast Wednesday.  When the two boats failed to return or report safe, anxious shore folk asked Coast Guard assistance.  (More details)
