Notes for Jean Baptiste Pitre:
I have not located definitive proof that Jean Baptiste is the son of Claude Marc Pitre/Isabelle Guerin, but set out below is my summation.
From Ile St. Jean on 1 November
1758 Jean Baptiste & Felicite disembarked at St. Malo from the ship Le Duc
Guillaume, having lost their first child while crossing to France [Robichaux:
The Acadian Exiles in Saint-Malo]. They settled in Pleudihen
through at least 1772. On 3 December 1785, Jean 58, Felicite 55, Charlotte
Marie 20, Pierre 19, Jacques 18, Francois 17, Felicite 16, and Marguerite 14
arrived in Louisiana on the ship La Ville D'Archangel. Sons Jean
and Joseph remained in France where they married. Jean's family settled in
the Pointe Coupee area.
I have seen his parents listed as Jean Pitre & Marguerite Theriot, but I do not
believe this to be reliable.
Jean Pitre and Marguerite Theriot were on Ile St. Jean at Riviere du Ouest for
the 1752 census. The listing appears as: "Jean Pitre, ploughman, native of
l'Acadie, aged 55 years, has been in the country fourteen months. Married to
Margueritte Terriaud, native of l'Acadie, aged 51 years. They have six children,
three sons and three daughters: Jean Pitre, aged 20 years, Pierre, aged 18
years, Enselme, aged 14 years, Marie, aged 30 years, Elizabeth, aged 28 years,
Anne, aged 15 years. They have the following live stock: two oxen, two calves,
one wether, three ewes, one sow, and four pigs. The land on which they are
settled is situated on the north side of the said Rivière du Ouest (The land on
which they are settled is that of Joseph Terriaud, their father and father in
law.) and was given to them verbally.
They have made a garden on it."
There is no mention of another son Jean Baptiste anywhere on Ile St. Jean. The
son Jean mentioned who was 20 in this census married Francoise Henry at Port La Joye, Ile St. Jean on 10 February 1754. He and his 3 children died at sea
on the crossing to France in 1758/9, and his widow was the only survivor of this
family.
Felicite Daigle's family were also on Ile St. Jean for the 1752 census, but they
were at Rivière du Moulin-à-scie: "Jean Daigre, ploughman, native of l'Acadie,
aged 54 years, he has been one year in the country. Married to Marie Braud,
native of l'Acadie, aged 46 years. They have three sons and nine
daughters: Jean Daigre, aged 22 years; Charles, aged 19 years; Paul, aged 11
years; Françoise, aged 24 years; Catherine, aged 23 years; Félicité, aged 18
years; Rose, aged 16 years; Marie, aged 13 years; Hursulle, aged 9 years;
Margueritte, aged 8 years; Jeanne Joseph, aged 4 years; Elisabeth, aged 3 years.
In live stock, two oxen, five cows, one calf, and two pigs. The land upon
which they are settled is situated as in the preceding case, it was given to
them verbally by Monsieur de Bonnaventure. On the said land they have made
a clearing of three arpents and a half in extent where they have sown half a
bushel of wheat and half a bushel of oats."
- Arrivals on 1 November 1758 on Le Duc Guillaume include:
Jean Baptiste Pitre (1733) & Felicite Daigle (1735)
Anselme Pitre (1738) s/o Jean/Marguerite Theriot
Francoise Henry (widow of Jean Pitre (1732) s/o Jean/Marguerite Theriot)
- Arrivals on 23 January 1759 on one of the "Five Ships" include:
Jean Daigle (1699) and 5 children
Jean Daigle (1730) & Marie Josephe Theriot (1735) s/o Jean/Marie Anne Braud
Benjamin Pitre (1725) & daughter s/o Claude/Marguerite Doiron
Charles Pitre (1739) & Anne Henry s/o Joseph/Isabelle Boudrot
Marie Pitre (1724) & Alexis Blanchard d/o Jean/Marguerite Theriot
Elizabeth Pitre (1728) & Jean Baptiste Henry d/o Jean/Marguerite Theriot
Suzanne Pitre (1731) & Jean Baptiste Olivier Henry d/o Jean/Marguerite Theriot
Pierre Pitre (1736) s/o Jean/Marguerite Theriot
Marie Blanche Pitre (1753) d/o Germain Pitre
Pierre Olivier Pitre (1737) s/o Germain/Marguerite Giroire
There is nothing in the ship lists to indicate Jean & Marguerite Theriot as Jean
Baptiste's parents. Once in St. Malo, my feeling is that if Jean Baptiste
Pitre had actually been Anselme Pitre's brother, and coming on the same ship,
they would have settled together, but Jean Baptiste settled in Pleudihen and
Anselme in Pleurtuit.
I believe Jean Baptiste Pitre's parents to be Claude Marc Pitre & Elizabeth
Guerin. Sometime after the 1752 census Claude's family were on Ile St.
Jean, as they were removed from there to England in 1758. It was on that
voyage that his wife Elizabeth died along with the rest of the family. But
if Jean Baptiste was their son and had married c1757 and was living near the
wife's family he would have missed that removal from the island. One of
Claude's daughters, Anne Josephe Pitre (born c1736) married on Ile St Jean to
Ambroise Bourg on 1 June 1757. (Witnesses were Alexandre & Jean Baptiste
Pitre.) She died at Cherbourg in 1759, so they weren't removed to England
either.
