Josephine Pitre:  Portland Press Herald (ME), Saturday, 26 September 2009:  Josephine ''Joan'' LaPierre always made sure she got up, got dressed and made the bed, every day.  ''She was a lady.  Everything had to be proper,'' said her youngest daughter, Patty Bickford.  ''She never would have a drop of dust on anything and she never went to bed with a dirty dish in the sink.''  Mrs. LaPierre died Thursday at the age of 106.  She was surrounded by her family when she celebrated her 106th birthday in August, and as described in the Aug. 16 Maine Sunday Telegram, she had ''a glowing face that smiles at everyone.''  Her daughter said Mrs. LaPierre wouldn't go out unless her hair was done and she was dressed nicely.  Bickford would take her mother for a pedicure, too.  Her daughter said her mother was very active, living in her own apartment until six months ago.  She would entice any of her four children - Bickford, Donald LaPierre, Lola Martin or Shirley Milose - 20 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren or 15 great-great-grandchildren to visit ''Great Nana'' for one of their favorite pies.  ''She made the most incredible pies,'' her daughter said. ''She'd keep them in the freezer for us.  She knew which one of us liked what kind of pie.''  One of her granddaughter's favorites was peach pie, and Bickford remembers Mrs. LaPierre saying, ''Well, I haven't seen her in a while, so here you go,'' giving Bickford the peach pie.  ''When my husband and I got home, I called my niece to tell her how good that pie was,'' Bickford said.  While most of her life was spent on the home front, Mrs. LaPierre did travel on occasion.  Her oldest daughter, Lola Martin, lives in Florida, and her daughter-in-law Bernadette LaPierre remembers traveling with Mrs. LaPierre four years ago to visit Martin and her family.  ''They took us to a casino,'' her daughter-in-law said. ''(Martin) and her husband went to bed by midnight, but Nana and I stayed out at the bar.  We laughed about sneaking back into the bedroom without letting her daughter know it was so late.  She never forgot that.''  Bickford said her mother's secret to life was drinking milk.  ''Whatever it was, she'd stop and drink milk,'' she said.  ''My father was a milkman for Hood for over 40 years, so there was always plenty of milk in the house.''  Mrs. LaPierre's husband, Alexander LaPierre, died in 1985.  They were married more than 65 years.  ''She was a homemaker,'' Bickford said. ''She papered, painted, she would chop wood and tend the coal fires.  In her yard, there wasn't a blade of grass out of place.''  She tried to pass on her homemaking skills, but Bickford said she never could quite make a bed to her mother's standards.  ''Nobody ever made it just right.  She'd always go behind me and fix it up,'' she said.  ''She was feisty right through it,'' her daughter-in-law said.
