Notes for Hypolite Paul Pitre:

Hypolite-Paul was the youngest child of Martin Benonie Pitre, who was the son of an Acadian in exile in France. Theirs was a large family set up like many others to farm along Bayou Lafourche.  Hypolite married at the age of 22 to Virginie Clouatre, daughter of an Acadian.

The young family is found in the 1840 census of Terrebonne parish as containing 2 small boys & a daughter: Louis-Adrien 8, Jeanne-Rose 4, and Amadeo 1.  A daughter Pamela has died as an infant.  By the 1850 census Hypolite is farming land valued at $900 and the family has expanded with Harrison 10, Justilien 8, and Seraphin 5.

Ten years on and the farm is valued at $480 and personal estate at $400.  Son Louis-Adrien has died 6 years before at the age of 22.  Daughter Jeanne-Rose is now the widow of Frenchman Claude Guerin and has returned to the family home with her own daughter Virginie 6.  Amadeo is newly married and his farm is $100, with $200 personal estate.  The remaining children are still at home: Harrison 15, Justilien 13 & Seraphin 11.

The Civil War begins the following year, but I can find no record that any of the sons served in the Confederate Army.  Hypolite dies in 1867 age 58.  I cannot locate a death record for Virginie but she does not seem to be in the 1870 census so presumably dies within this time frame as well.  Daughter Jeanne Rose dies in 1863 aged just 26 (while her daughter Virginie marries Frank Benjamin Bergeron in 1871), and son Harrison dies in 1866 aged 25.  I cannot locate any records for Seraphin after 1860.  The families of sons Amadeo and Justilien (who marries in 1870) remained in the Terrebonne area for the next few decades.
