Walter Earl Peters: Times Colonist (Victoria, BC), Monday, 15 March 1993: Peters - Walter Earl (Buz) passed away at home on March 12, 1993,after a short but courageous battle with cancer. At his bedside was his wife of 23 years, Avril; his friend of 30 years Greg Martell and sister-in-law Irene. Buz was born May 15, 1930 in Saint John, New Brunswick. In his youth Buz was an avid participant in sports, excelling in baseball and basketball on championship teams and playing semi-professional baseball as a pitcher. After serving in the navy and the army, Buz joined the air force in 1956 which led him to be transferred to the west coast of B.C. which he grew to love. After his discharge in Comox in 1963, Buz worked for the CBC in Goose Bay, Labrador and on the Mid-Canada Line. He came west again in 1967 as a DJ in Courtenay and then in Campbell River. While in Campbell River Buz joined the B.C. Civil Service in the Corrections Branch of the Department of the Attorney General. Buz transferred to Victoria in 1967 with the Corrections Service and later transferred to the Ministry of Finance as the Commissioner of Affidavit in Wills and Probate. On August 1, 1969 he married Avril Brett of Victoria. In 1975 he was appointed the Assistant Director of Personnel for the B.C. Assessment Authority. Due to severe health problems Buz took medical disability in 1984. Despite severe health limitation Buz was determined to live to his full capacity. His passion was golf when his health allowed and he was an avid woodworker and a familiar figure working in his garage. His final battle with cancer was short but he accepted life as it was given him. His love of life, his love of laughter and his determination and strength will be sadly missed by his many friends, especially his loving wife Avril, his in-laws Bud and Nancy Brett and sister-in-law Irene. Buz was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers. He is survived by his sister Meryl and nieces and nephews in Saint John and a sister Agatha Phinney and her husband George and daughter Ellen in Bangor, Maine. Special thanks to Greg Martell for his quiet compassionate care and assistance during these trying months and for the companionship and comfort he gave Buz. Also thank you to Dr. H. Heimlich for his care and friendship for the past 25 years; to Brenda, our support system from the CRD; to Sharon from Helping Hands for her capable assistance; and to the immeasurable support from Hospice. Buz requested cremation. A memorial service will be held at Sands Funeral Chapel, Victoria, on Friday, March 19 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the "Help Fill a Dream Foundation of Canada," Victoria, B.C. would be appreciated.
