Ernest J. Pitre:  Teche News (St. Martinville), Friday, 7 July 1950:  St. Martin Native among first to die in Korea:  A native of St. Martin Parish, Corporal Ernest Pitre, is among the first five American casualties of the fighting in Korea.  The Army announced Monday that he was missing on a flight from Japan to Pusan, Korea.  Pitre was living in Jeanerette with his mother, Mrs. Frances B. Copp, before enlisting in the service.  His father, Ernest Pitre Sr., now resides in New Iberia.  Pitre enlisted in the Army three years ago, and re-enlisted last April.  He had been in Tokyo for the past two years.

- Death in service record - Corporal Pitre was a member of the 71st Signal Service Battalion, U.S. Army.  On June 30, 1950, he was a passenger in a C-54D Skymaster transport from the 22nd Troop Carrier Squadron, 374th Troop Carrier Wing.  While on the ground at Suwon Air Base (K-13), Korea, the aircraft was destroyed by a North Korean bombing strike.  All 23 on board were killed.  Corporal Pitre was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.

Marie Louise Pitre:  Marie Louise Landry, 96, (born July 2, 1917), died peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Pelican Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Maurice.  She was a native of Loreauville and a longtime resident of New Iberia.  A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Marie Louise is survived by two sons John (Marion) Landry of Prairieville and Phillip (Mary) Landry of Lafayette; three grandsons Sean (Cindy) Landry, Blair (Erin) Landry and Kevin Landry, all of Lafayette; four step-grandchildren Ryan Broussard of Baton Rouge, Allie Broussard of Lafayette, Eric Robinson (Tien) of San José, California, and Ryan (Kathryn) Robinson of Oswego, Illinois; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and their families.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest F. and Frances Bernard Pitre; two sisters Virginia Pitre Derouen Eddleman and Laura Pitre Dillon; two brothers C. Thomas Pitre and Ernest J. Pitre; and two grandsons Eric Landry and Brian Landry.  Memorials in her name may be directed to the American Heart Association.  In 1995 Louise chose to donate her body to medical science upon her death and the family has honored her request; therefore, a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

 

Virginia Pitre:  Mrs. Virginia Petre Eddleman, 54, a resident of 510 Seashore Manor, Biloxi, died at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at Howard memorial Hospital in Biloxi where she had been a patient for one week.  Born March, 1921, in St. Martinville, LA, she was a retired school teacher and had resided in Biloxi for a year and a half.  She was a member of the First Baptist church of Biloxi and the National Teachers Association.  Survivors include her widower, Richard Eddleman of Biloxi, and two sisters, Mrs. Louise Landry of New Iberia, LA and Mrs. Laura Dillon of San Diego, CA.  Friends may call at Bradford-'Keefe Funeral Home in Biloxi from 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesday.  The funeral will be held from the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday, followed by burial in Southern Memorial Park.
