MISC: The Hope Standard (Hope, BC), Wednesday, 19 November 1969: A coroner's jury Tuesday attached no blame in the Aug. 3 death of Silver Creek resident Peter Striga, 43. The jury ruled that Mr. Striga met his death about 8:30 p.m. Aug. 3, 27 miles up Ross Lake Road after a beating he received in a fight with Clement Petrie. Death was due to a ruptured spleen, which caused massive internal hemorrhage, the jury said. The jury rules that Mr. Petrie acted in self defence. It made no recommendations. Five witnesses - Mrs. Jean Malo of Calgary, Mr. Petrie's sister; her husband, Lucien Joe Malo; Mrs. Frances Petrie of North Surrey; Zella Parks, Mr. Striga's common law wife and her brother, Clement Petrie of North Surrey - testified that Mr. Striga attacked Mr. Petrie at a picnic near Silver Lake on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 3. The witnesses said Mr. Striga knocked Mr. Petrie to the ground and wrestled with him after an argument with Zella Parks. The witnesses said Mr. Striga came at Mr. Petrie with a club three or four feet long and Mr. Petrie threw a pot of water at him, then grabbed the club and hit Mr. Striga with it. The men wrestled on the ground again for a few minutes before the women pulled them apart, the witnesses said. Mr. Striga then got in his truck and drove several miles down the road. Mrs. Jean Malo said Mr. Striga 'acted like a madman' during the fight. Mrs. Frances Petrie said Mr. Striga was in 'a very foul mood' after the group reached the area where they were to go fishing. Earlier that day, he 'seemed quite nice, an agreeable sort of person', she said. Mrs. Petrie testified she saw Mr. Striga on the ground beside the truck when the others were returning to Silver Creek after the fight but she did not realize he was hurt. Zella Parks said Mr. Striga didn't complain of injuries after the fight but had often complained previously that his head hurt. "I made many appointments with the doctor but he refused to go," she said. She said Mr. Striga was drinking heavily during the afternoon and didn't go fishing with the others. She said she refused to get in the truck with Mr. Striga after the fight because "he's beaten me up a good many times and I was afraid." Clement Petrie, testifying under the protection of the Canada Evidence Act and the B.C. Evidence Act, said Mr. Striga lunged at him and tore his clothes off after he asked what he and Zella Parks were arguing about. Mr. Petrie said he landed one punch to the body during the fight and swung the club against Mr. Striga's body after taking the stick from him. He said Mr. Striga was much bigger than he was and that he was very short-winded at the time of the fight because of asthma. "I used the stick in self-defence, on the spur of the moment," Mr. Petrie testified. "I felt I was protecting myself." He said Mr. Striga seemed "out of his mind with booze." Mr. Petrie said he did not know Mr. Striga was hurt in the fight and thought he was "lying there playing possum" beside the truck a few miles down the road from the picnic site. Mr. Petrie said his father (who had also been on the fishing expedition) told him Mr. Striga had a jack handle and would use it on him, so he didn't stop when he passed Mr. Striga's truck on the way back to Hope. A pathologist's report revealed that Mr. Striga had four broken ribs, a ruptured spleen, a massive abdominal hemorrhage and minor injuries. Coroner Dr. R. D. Morrison, who conducted the inquest, said if a doctor had examined Mr. Striga within a few hours of the fight, had diagnosed the injury as a ruptured spleen and had operated on Mr. Striga, his life could have been saved. Mr. Striga's body was found Monday morning, Aug. 4, about 24 miles up Silver Skagit Road.
