Obituary: Democrat and Chronicle (Rochester,
NY),
Monday, 20 October 1952: (photo) Rheumatic fever claimed another
victim this weekend when a 24-year-old Rochester husband and father died.
Donald LaShomb, 13 Alden Rd., passed away late Saturday night (Oct. 18,
1952) in Veterans Hospital, Buffalo, of a rheumatic heart condition. He is
survived by a 24-year-old wife, Joyce Hovey LaShomb, and a 22-month-old
son, David. Mr. LaShomb had been ill since April, when he was
stricken for the fourth time with rheumatic fever. He was in General
Hospital for medical treatment until last Thursday, when he was taken to
Buffalo. He said good night to several members of his family who were
visiting him at 9:15 o'clock. He died an hour and a half later. His
last attack of rheumatic fever, before the fatal one, was in 1945, after he was
discharged from the Navy after eight months of wartime service. He arrived
home with influenza. This was followed by ear trouble, the mumps and
finally rheumatic fever. He was ill nearly a year. When he regained
his health, he married and started work in the color print department at Eastman
Kodak Company, where he was employed until last April. He first had
rheumatic fever when he was 9 1/2 years old. He was ill again when 16.
A native Rochesterian, born Aug. 23, 1928, he attended Schools 42 and 30 and was
a pupil at Jefferson and Charlotte High Schools. It was while he was in
the latter that he enlisted in the Navy. After training at what was then
Sampson Naval Base he went to San Diego Hospital for further instruction as a
hospital corpsman. The LaShombs lived in a new home, purchased four years
ago, which they decorated themselves. Mr. LaShomb had just built a garage
on the property when he became ill. He was a bowler and loved to fish and
hunt, but all his activities were curtailed because of his heart condition.
He was a member of the Lake Side Presbyterian Church. He leaves, besides
his wife and son, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo LaShomb, 232 Chili Ave.,
and two brothers, Gary and Jacques. Funeral services will be
Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Hedge Memorial Chapel, University Ave.
