Notes for Bernice Smith:

Obituary:  The Bangor Daily News (Bangor, ME), Saturday, 29 January 2000:  Otter Creek - Bernice 'Bunny' Smith Peters, 89, died Jan. 27, 2000, at the Sonogee Rehabilitation Center, in Bar Harbor.  She was born April 9, 1910, in Otter Creek, the daughter of George and Bessie (Grover) Smith.  She was a lifelong housewife, who worked most summers at various estates in Seal Harbor.  She was married for 58 years to the love of her life, Donald 'Pete' Peters.  Bunny was a lifelong member of the Otter Creek Congregational Church, as well as teaching Sunday school there for many years.  She was a member of the National Audubon Society, the Ladies Auxiliary of Otter Creek, and the Ladies Sewing Circle.  Bunny was an avid reader and once wrote to Thornton W. Burgess, the renowned children's book author, to tell him how much she found his books to be both entertaining and educational.  Amazingly, he wrote back thanking her for her lovely letter.  Subsequently, she became friends and pen pals with his assistant, Kay.  A shy person by nature, she wasn't comfortable with crowds of people she didn't know, but was most happy with friends and family.  She cherished each and every one.  She enjoyed feeding her birds and the companionship of her cat, who learned to cohabit with her backyard feathered friends.  Bunny was a very special person, gentle and warm, with a kind word for everyone.  She had a way of making everyone feel a little uplifted after seeing her.  She was that rare person who never complained and always saw the 'glass as half full'.  She died never knowing how many people were touched by her loving ways.  Bunny was predeceased by her son, David; husband, Donald; brother, Julian Smith; and sisters, Doris Jeffers and Gladys Richardson.  She is survived by her brother, Donald Smith of Northeast Harbor; her sister, Teresa Salisbury of Bar Harbor; and her son, Julian of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.  She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Although she loved all of her family and friends greatly, she was especially close to her dear cousin, Paula Richardson Gannon and close friends, Ruth Craney and Roberta Hanscom Sharp.  At the end of her life, they, along with her son, Julian, provided great comfort and love.  She also shared a special bond with her dear nieces, Dede Jeffers Paine of Bar Harbor and Connie Jeffers Hector of San Francisco.  Friends are invited to call 12:30-2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mt. Desert, where funeral service will be held 2 p.m. with the Rev. William 'Mac' Bigelow officiating.  Spring interment will be at Otter Creek Cemetery.  If friends desire, contributions in Bunny's memory made be made to the Jesup Memorial Library, Bar Harbor.
