MISC:  New Orleans Item (LA), Thursday, 15 December 1938:  Driver Faints from Shock as Train Crashes his Truck:  Alfred Pitre, 33-year-old Gretna truck driver, had such a close brush with death in New Orleans this morning that he became unconscious from shock, remaining in that condition for several minutes.  But he had presence of mind enough to slam on his brakes as he saw a Louisville and Nashville railroad passenger train approaching and escaped with slight bruises of the right hand and right leg.  Pitre, driving an oyster truck for Popich and Jurisch, an oyster house of 542 North Rampart street, had started from the river on Barracks street and as he reached the tracks noticed the train.  "I looked up and saw I didn't have time to cross," he said, "so I put on the brakes."  The train struck the truck a glancing blow, doing negligible damage, but frightening Pitre into unconsciousness.  Sergeant James Hand of the Third precinct and other policemen took Pitre, who lives at 708 Newton street in Gretna, to Charity hospital, where he was treated and released.  "It was only good judgment that saved me that time," he said after being revived.  The train was No. 7, a Gulf Coast local.
