Inventory of Adele Giraudeau

 

 

Presented here is the English translation of the inventory taken at the death of Adele Giraudeau (30 October 1795 New Orleans – 1 February 1833 New Orleans).  It is followed by the original French.  A copy of the original document  was obtained, transcribed and translated thanks to two descendants of Adele Giraudeau :  Yvette Herrman of Switzerland and Yvette ‘Tippi’ Rothaermel of New Orleans.

Inventory of the late Adèle Giraudeau’s estate

Today, the 18th of July  of the year 1833 and the 58th of the Independance of the United States of America,

 

At the request of Mr Joseph Lasalle, from this town of New Orleans, and by virtue of an order of the honourable Court of Evidences in and for the town and parish of New Orleans on the last 19th of April and of an additional order of last 27th of June of the said Court appointing the undersigned notary to make the inventory of the goods depending of Adèle Giraudeau’s estate and whose copy, duly certified by deputy Register of Testaments is joined for recourse,

 

I, Louis J. Caire, public notary in and for the town and parish of New Orleans, duly commissionned and sworn, have gone into a house located Royal Street between Dumaine and Ste Anne in this town, occupied on the ground floor by the said Lasalle, where being at the Conservation of the rights of the parties and to whom it belongs will proceed to the inventory of the assets, furniture, house and slaves, depending of the succession of the said Adèle Giraudeau after the death of whom there has been no apposition of seals. Which said assets will be presented and indicated to me by the said Lasalle who promised before the undersigned notary to truly represent everything and to hide or embezzle nothing that would belong to the succession, in presence

 

1.      of the said Joseph Lasalle, here as the legal guardian of Gabriel Giraudeau, illegitimate (out of marriage) child of the deceased, and of Elizabeth Lasalle, Joséphine Lasalle and Emérite Lasalle, minor illegitimate children of the said Adèle Giraudeau and of the said Joseph Lasalle, Catherine Lasalle, their last child, having died since the death of her mother the 7 of this month, appointed at this function on order of the Court of Evidences on the 18th of April of the present year and sworn the next day 19th of last April.

 

2.      of Mr Hubert Remy residing in this town, co-guardian of the said minor children, appointed at this function by the honourable Court of Evidences the 18th of April of this year and sworn the 19th of same month,

 

3.      of Mr Maurice Jacob Goetre and  Mr Charles Darcantel, witnesses to .... and living in this city.

 

 

The valuing will be done by Mr Philippe Morris and Mr Célestin Boudousquié, assessors appointed by the said Court of Evidences on 19th of April last and sworn on the 15th of this month.

 

To which inventory it has been proceeded the following way :

 

 

20 dresses and blouses, 1 unfinished India dress, 1 skirt Gros de Naple, 1 black veil,

1 black shawl, 5 color handkerchiefs, 7 muslin handkercheifs, 13 shirts, 6 under-

skirts, 1 cloth coat, 1 merinos shawl, 8 pairs of plain cotton stockings, 2 pairs of

embroidered stockings, 1 pair of silk stockings, 8 belts, 1 scarf, 2 lace handkercheifs,

the whole estimated forty piastres                                                                                              40

1 big spoon, 17 pieces of cutlery and 18 silver coffee spoons weighing together 122

Adèle Giraudeau by salesdeed before Octave (delattres ?) on the 30th of June 1830,

measuring each in english feet 53 feet in front of (Elmire ?) Street on 120 feet deep

In this place Mr Lasalle declared that 200 piastres are due for the last term on the price

of the said plots of land. He moreover declared that, with the consent of the deceased,

he let build some constructions on the said plots of land which he paid with his own funds

and for which every law reserve is done.

Total of the estimated value of the goods included in the present inventory, the amount of  3.456 piastres and 75 cents  -  3.456,75

All this has been performed from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  This being done, as there was nothing more to say, understand nor declare, as Mr Lemelle under oath in the usual way asserted, we closed the present inventory and the things included were let in possession of the said Lasalle who takes them in charge to represent or give account when and to whom it may concern.

 

And Mr Lasalle, the valuers and the witnesses signed, as well as me, notary, after reading the present document.
