As with other Pitre descendants who crossed the border from French-speaking Canada into English-speaking New England, the families below translated into various versions of the Pitre surname or dit names.  The group associated with Orleans County are descended from Joseph Pitre & Marie Antoinette Lupien and developed from Pitre to Lepitre and Lapete or La Pete.  The excerpts below may not constitute all the Vermont Pitres, only the ones I've located thus far.

I've recently ascertained that some Peters-surnamed families in Burlington are from the Ignace Pitre/Marie Anne Primeau family of Quebec.  That family was last identified in the 1861 census of Ste. Helene, Bagot, Quebec.  After the death of a daughter and Ignace himself in 1865 I lost track of them.  The 1870 census of Burlington, VT shows the widow Marie Anne Primeau and 3 of their sons.
