1860 Louisiana Census

Using surname indexes and the online 1860 census at ancestry.com I have extracted and transcribed the Pitre families from the appropriate parishes.  These excerpts below do not include the slave schedules.  All parishes counted during June/July, except St. Landry which was done during August/September/October.

In the 1860 Assumption census, the place called "Church" in the third ward on the 1860 census was Plattenville, which is along Bayou Lafourche.  The community of "Alligator" was along Bayou Alligator in the present-day third ward near the railroad track.  "Crane's Forge," so-called after a blacksmith named Crane who lived there, is present-day Belle Rose.  "Star" was along the railroad track around the area of the present-day community known as Supreme.

Questions asked in the 1860 census:

1-Name; 2-Age; 3-Sex; 4-Color; 5-Occupation of persons over age 15; 6-Value of real estate; 7-Value of personal estate; 8-Name of state, territory, or country of birth; 9-Whether the person was married during the year; 10-Whether the person was deaf-mute, blind, insane, an “idiot,” a pauper, or a convict.
