Obituary:  Daily World (Opelousas, LA), Wednesday, 2 January 1980:  An Opelousas man died Tuesday from injuries suffered Monday in a one-vehicle accident about seven miles north of Opelousas on U.S. 167.  Widnay Pitre, 52, of Rt. 6 Box 415, died in the Opelousas General Hospital Monday morning.  The exact time of death was not known by a spokesman for Louisiana State Police Troop K.  According to the accident report filed by Troop K, Pitre was travelling north on the highway at approximately 10:15 p.m. Monday when he lost control and ran off the roadway on the left side of the road.  The car entered a left-hand curve and travelled approximately 300 feet on the shoulder before striking a bridge railing.  The car followed the bridge railing for several feet then swerved sharply left across the roadway.  The vehicle struck the bridge railing, became airborne and went over the railing into a ditch on the right side.  The car skidded approximately 90 feet before coming to rest on its side in a coulee.  One passenger in the vehicle, Mrs. Jessie Rose Pitre, 52, of the same address, told officers the headlights from an oncoming car had blinded Pitre.  Mrs. Pitre suffered only minor injuries in the crash.  The investigating officer for Troop K estimated the speed of the Pitre vehicle to be in excess of 70 miles per hour at the time of the accident.  The vehicle sustained heavy damage in the mishap.  Both passengers were removed to the Opelousas General Hospital by the Fire District III rescue unit.  Pitre was charged with failure to maintain control and a blood alcohol test was taken and will be analyzed at the Louisiana State Police Criminalistics Laboratory in Baton Rouge.  Funeral services for Pitre were to be held at 1 p.m. today in the St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas with burial in the Cedar Hills Cemetery in Washington with Sibille's Funeral Home in charge.  He is survived by his wife, Rose Lafleur Pitre of Opelousas; three sons, Bruce and Joseph Pitre, both of Baton Rouge and Travis Pitre of Opelousas; one daughter, Brenda Rome of Donaldsonville; four brothers, Wilfred, Murray, Herbert and Stanward Pitre, all of Opelousas; one sister, Million Johnson of Opelousas; his mother, Mrs. Ida Pitre of Opelousas; six grandchildren.
