Joseph Hector PitreMorning Sentinel (Waterville, ME), Monday, 16 June 1941:  The first drowning of the swimming season in this vicinity occurred yesterday afternoon in Fairfield when Hector Peters, 40-year-old Fairfield mill employee, met death in the waters of the Kennebec river.  Peters, according to spectators, was swimming from the Water street bank of the Kennebec to a rock in the middle of the river when he suddenly disappeared from sight.  It is believed that he suffered a cramp.  His disappearance was reported by Eli Gregory and John Gurney of Fairfield.  Gurney dove into the water and swam to the spot where Peters had disappeared, recovering the body of the man.  Peters was taken back to shore and artificial respiration was used in an attempt to revive him.  Dr. F. L. Tozier of Fairfield went to the scene to give treatment but his attempts to revive Peters were unsuccessful.  Unmarried, Peters was employed at the American Woolen company mill in Fairfield.  He is the son of Mrs. Minnie Peters of Burrill street, Fairfield, who survives him.  Other survivors are four sisters, Mrs. Eastman Webber of Winslow, Mrs. William Scott of Vassalboro, Mrs. Norman Green of this city and Mrs. Arthur Clair of Fairfield; a brother, William of Fairfield.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 7 o'clock at the Immaculate Heart of Mary church at Fairfield.
