Elizabeth Sophie Lajambe: 14
October 1920: A respected resident of East Cornwall, Mrs. Martelle,
wife of William Martelle, passed away at her home on Gladstone, on Thursday
last (7 Oct 1920), at the age of 62 years. The deceased, whose maiden name
was Elizabeth Lajambe, was a daughter of the late Nelson Lajambe,
and was born at Tyotown. She spent her life in this section, and was held
in high esteem by all who knew her, and her death is deeply regretted by a wide
circle of friends. Mr. and Mrs. Martelle were married in Cornwall on Oct.
14, 1883, 38 years ago today. Mrs. Martelle lost her eyesight seven years
ago, but was in good health until two weeks before her death, when she was
stricken with paralysis, and was unable to speak afterwards. Surviving are
her husband, two sons and two daughters, Joseph A. and Francis N. Martelle,
and Mrs. Fred Anderson of Cornwall, and Mrs. Toussaint Belanger of
Quebec City; also one sister, Mrs. Antoine Chatelain, of Plantagenet.
The funeral took place on Saturday morning to the Church of the Nativity and St.
Columban's cemetery, the requiem mass being celebrated by Rev. D. Secours.
The pall-bearers were J. Eamoe, Peter McDougald, O. Lajambe, Napoleon Samson,
Frank Deruchie and Joseph Lalonde. The deceased was a member of the Altar
Society, and the following ladies acted as honorary pall bearers: Mesdames
Jarvis, St. Pierre, Leduc, Caza, Deruchie and Ouellette. Among the
relatives present from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Gaspard Greff of Vincent de
Paul; Mr. and Mrs. N. Samson of Montreal; Mrs. Ernest Poirier and son Leo, and
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Wattie, St. Henri; Paul Martelle, St. Annes; Joseph Martelle,
Oswego, N.Y.; Mr. and Mrs. Toussaint Belanger, Quebec City. Many handsome
floral offerings and spiritual bouquets were placed on the casket by
sympathizing friends. The bereaved husband and children have the sympathy
of the community.
