MISC: Detroit Free Press (MI), Wednesday, 16 December 1908: Mrs. M. Peets, 315 Third street, Lorain, O., reported to the police yesterday that someone stole her valise and contents, valued at £15, from the Grand Trunk depot, foot of Brush street, while she was waiting for a Lake Shore train to depart.
- The Lorain Journal (Lorain, OH), Monday, 20 June 1927: Mrs. M. Peets, 206 W. 17th-st. took cold during house-cleaning and has been confined to her bed for two weeks. Her friends drop in for little chats. "I wonder if Lorain folks realize what that means," she said Saturday, "and what it would mean if they couldn't have any lady friends." Mrs. Peets knows. "My husband came home several years ago and said he had bought a farm. But it was nine miles back in the forest; no roads, no water except as we dug a hole and got it to dip up. No women - all lumbering. That was away up in Canada. We floated in on a jumper - that's a rude, flat sort of boat. There were gullies everywhere with water in them. We hitched the team to the jumper and they walked in the water. We bored a well and got water so strong of minerals that it ate the tea-kettle right up. My son, Jimmy Mills, was 16. He used to drive loads of bolts - that's logs sawed into short lengths. Once the horses ran away and the bolts fell on him and injured his hand very badly. They found him there and the horses near. They had gone a-straddle of a tree and stopped themselves. In two years' time we had cut the timber and made a road to town. We were picking up logs and sticks until midnight always, clearing up the farm land. Five years we stayed there, but I couldn't stand it any longer. I couldn't have any lady friends. Everybody was keeping batch and buying new farms. Once a man came to the camp when I was alone and wanted to show me the picture of his wife and children. He said, 'I won't hurt you,' which was queer, too. But after he had gone, the police came along looking for him. He had killed his wife and children." Mrs. Peet has a framed photograph of the farm yard, showing the rail fences, the log buildings, the team, the cow, the family - her husband, her father, her three sons and herself - and the trackless, womanless wilderness around it.
