Obituary:  Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN), Tuesday, 2 November 1993:  Leonard LaShomb, 72, retired executive vice president of the AFL-CIO, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease and cancer Thursday at the Minneapolis Veterans Medical Center.  After serving in the Army Air Corps in World War II, he returned to South St. Paul and worked for Swift & Co.  He became a member of United Packinghouse Workers of America Local 167.  In 1956 he was elected district vice president of the recently merged AFL and CIO.  Two years later he was named to head the state labor organization's political arm, the Committee on Political Education (COPE).  In 1966 he was named executive vice president, a position he held until retiring in 1979.  His wife, Sophie, said he promoted equal rights for all employees, a stance exemplified in his opposition to a bill requiring a deposit on beverage bottles and cans.  Glassmakers and steelworkers unions were against it because they said it would cost their members jobs.  LaShomb and others helped defeat the bill.  Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Nancy Kemp, of Mendota Heights, and Laurie Lindell, of Atlanta.  Services were held Monday at Mueller-Bies Funeral Home in Roseville.
