Obituary:  Courier & Freeman (Potsdam, NY), 17 August 1938:  The bodies of Carlton George LaShombe, 29, and his son, Carlton Jr., 7, who were drowned in the Racquette river Sunday, were found at 9:15 a.m. Monday in 10 feet of water about 75 feet from shore.  The father's body was caught on a grappling hook from a boat containing Saul Greenwood, Harry Marsh, and Robert LaPoint, all Sissonville residents.  The son's body was found nearby.  After eating breakfast, the two started out about 9 a. m. Sunday for the river in LaShombe's car.  They set out in a boat to gather driftwood and, according to Dr. S. P. Brown, coroner, had made one trip, bringing back a log about a foot thick and leaving it on shore with an ax and pole.  Dr. Brown made an investigation of the tragedy after which he gave a verdict of accidental death.  He said it appeared as though the boy fell out and the father, who was a good swimmer, had gone in to save him.  A stiff breeze was blowing and took the boat downstream.  The elder LaShombe is believed to have floundered in the water and caught himself in some weeds.  Discovery of the bodies climaxed an all-night search by members of the Potsdam fire department, Racquette River department volunteers and state and local police.  When her husband and son failed to return for dinner Sunday night, Mrs. LaShombe went down to the river to call them.  Not finding them, she summoned neighbors who notified local police.  The fire department was called and the emergency signal, 141, was sounded.  The rural pumper went to the scene and men started dragging the river in boats.  Chief Carlton Gebo sent the squad car to Canton, to secure the flood-lighting system of the fire department there.  The squad car made the round trip to Canton in 25 minutes.  Until midnight a crowd ranging from 500 to 1000 persons watched searchers drag the river.  At one time, over 12 boats were out in the river dragging the bottom with hooks, hakes and poles.  Between 12 and 15 Potsdam firemen kept vigil on the scene all night playing the floodlight back and forth over the water as the boats searched different sections.  Shortly after daybreak weary firemen waded through swamp water, knee deep, thinking that the bodies might possibly have washed in there.  At 6 a.m., a group of red-eyed searchers departed for Potsdam, two miles distant.  Within a short time another group of firemen were on the scene to continue dragging.  Mrs. LaShombe, who had been at the river bank since she discovered them missing, had remained there all night scanning the water.  She collapsed when the bodies were recovered.  Carlton George LaShombe, born in North Lawrence Nov. 20, 1908, was a son of George and Mary LaShombe.  He had lived in Potsdam for a number of years, moving to Sissonville three months ago where he was employed by the paper company.  In 1930 he married Miss Hazel Sharpsten, Pyrites, in Potsdam.  Besides Carlton, Jr., there are two other children in the family, Elaine Mary, 5, and Roger Azel, 3.  The little boy was born in Potsdam April. 27, 1931.

Notes for Hazel Alberta Sharpstein:

MISC:  Fort Covington Sun (NY), April 1942:  Harold McCabe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry McCabe of Fort Covington and a student at the Canton Agricultural and Technical Institute, and another young college man rescued a woman from drowning at Potsdam on the Sunday night of April 12th, according to information received here.  The woman's name is Mrs. Hazel Lashomb, about 28, widow of Harold Lashomb who was drowned with his son five years ago.  Mrs. Lashomb was an employe of the George Crowley restaurant on Water street near the Racket river in Potsdam and finished work about 11 o'clock on that night.  Her purse was found on a concrete abutment near the point where she was pulled from the stream.  Harold and his friend, Edward Wannamaker, were nearby and heard the woman's screams.  Harold who is an excellent swimmer jumped into the water after her.  The woman was unconscious when pulled from the river and was taken to the Potsdam hospital where she recovered after treatment.  She was in the water about two minutes, it is believed.
