Obituary: Providence Journal (Providence, RI), Monday, 9 February 1959: George A. Peters, 68, of 135 Kingstown Rd., Narragansett, died yesterday morning at the Rhode Island Hospital after a short illness. He was the husband of Ellen (Casey) Peters. He was born in New Bedford, a son of the late Albert H. and Mary A. (Landers) Peters. He had been a resident of Narragansett for about 20 years. He was a salesman. He was a member of retreat League of Our Lady of Peace Retreat, the Holy Name Society of St. Francis Council, K. of C., No. 2011. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Miss Margaret L. Peters of Narragansett, Mrs. Janice P. Wheelan of Providence; a sister, Mrs. Alice P. Casey of Peace Dale, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. from the Forbes Funeral Home, Wakefield, with a requiem Mass in St. Philomena's Church, Narragansett, at 9. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale.

Margaret Lyons Peters, 64, of 125 Kingstown Rd., a retired senior casework supervisor for the state Department for Children and their Families, died yesterday in the Jane Brown Unit of Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. Born in Little Rock, Ark., she was a daughter of the late George A. and Ellene (Casey) Peters. She received a bachelor's degree in business administration from the former Rhode Island State College, now the University of Rhode Island, in 1940, and a bachelor's degree in education from the former Rhode Island College of Education, now Rhode Island College, in 1941. She began her career in state service as assistant manager of the URI bookstore in 1942, moving into social work in 1952. She returned to school and received a master's degree in social services from Boston University in 1956. Employed by the state in social service capacities for more than 31 years, she retired as a senior casework supervisor in August 1983. On the day of her retirement, Gov. Garrahy proclaimed Aug. 3, 1983, Margaret L. Peters Day. She was a member of the Rhode Island Alliance of Social Service Employees, Service Employees International Union, Local 580, AFL-CIO; the Rhode Island Foster Parents Association, National Foster Parents Association, National Association of Social Workers, Rhode Island Conference of Social Workers and the American Association of Retired Persons. A communicant of St. Thomas More Church, Narragansett, she leaves a sister, Janice Peters Wheelan of Peace Dale. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 9 a.m. from the Forbes Funeral Home, Wakefield, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas More Church, Rockland Street, Narragansett, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale.

Wheelan, 92, formerly of Wakefield, died Tuesday. She was the wife of
the late Daniel O. Wheelan Jr. Born in Tuscaloosa, Ala., she was a
daughter of the late George A. and Elene (Casey) Peters. Mrs.
Wheelan was a clinical Social Worker for the State of Rhode Island, retiring in
1988. She is survived by five children, Daniel O. Wheelan III of
Narragansett; Susan Wheelan and her spouse Jane Winter of Provincetown,
Mass.; Mary Wheelan and her spouse Strong Oak Lefebvre of Worthington,
Mass.; Christopher Wheelan of Burrillville; and George Wheelan of
Burrillville; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A memorial
service will be Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Rocky Brook Advent Christian Church,
83 Sweet Fern Lane, Peace Dale. Burial will be private. Visiting hours are at
the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, Friday from 5 to 7
p.m. Flowers are welcome or donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s
Association.
