Obituaries for the children:
Frederick Allan Peters: (unknown paper) A brutal highway accident, near Stewiacke, N.S., has taken the lives of five young Navy men and brought Christmas sadness to widely-separated Canadian homes. Included in the five was AB. Fred Allan Peters, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hector Peters, of Grand Falls. The others were: OS. Gordon David Ryan, 18, Vancouver; OS. Jack Michaley, 21, Rossland, B.C.; Brockville Willette MacLaren, 19, whose widow is stationed with the 3650 W.A.F. Squadron at Sampson Air Base, Geneva, N.Y. and OS. Sandborne Smith, 19, Lennoxville, Que. MacLaren was instantly killed when the coupe collided with a truck at the brow of a hill Friday night. The others died in hospital the same night. The two occupants of the truck, residents of Elmsdale, N.S., were injured slightly. Peters is survived by his parents; five brothers, Donald, Clayton and Walbert, all of Hamilton, Ont., and Harvey and Norman, at home, and one sister, Mildred, at home. An inquest began at Truro, N.S., on Saturday into the deaths of the five ratings killed when their coupe smashed head-on into a truck near Stewiacke, on the Halifax highway. The inquest was adjourned on January 4th, after three witnesses gave evidence. Two of the witnesses were Navy men, who identified the dead, and the third was Dr. Seymour MacKenzie, Jr. of Truro, who said all the men died from fractures of the skull. Reports said the bodies were badly mangled. It took nearly an hour of cutting and prying the twisted wreckage of the car to free two of the bodies. The 18-foot-long car was telescoped to a length of 12 feet.
