Misc.:

Mary Leona Peters:  Detroit Times (Detroit, MI), Thursday, 26 August 1943:  (photo of family) - Mrs. Alex Koprin, furniture and family out in the street homeless - Mrs. Koprin feeding sandwiches to her children, William, 11; Frances, 6; Donald, 8; and Leona, 10, after the family was evicted from 6644 E. Lafayette for non-payment of rent.  The father, Alexander, has been ill had no money to pay):  Evicted for non-payment of rent, the Alexander Koprin family, four small children and mother and dad, are today surveying their belongings piled on the street at 6644 E. Lafayette and wondering where they'll live.  Alexander Koprin, the father, said he was ill for three weeks and, during that time, was unable to raise the $25 for the month's rent on their flat.

- Detroit Times (Detroit, MI), Friday, 27 August 1943:  Evicted Family finds a Home - The evicted, destitute family of Alexander Koprin, formerly of 6644 E. Lafayette, will have a new home in one of the government housing projects next Wednesday.  Also aiding the parents and four youngsters ejected yesterday for non-payment of rent are two businessmen, Jack Gottlieb and Harry Mandel of 501 Michigan, who gave the family $25 after reading of their homeless, money-less plight in yesterday's Times.  The parents with the two little girls and two boys, were placed by the police in a public shelter at 3126 Fort, where they are all sleeping and eating until they go into their new home.

- Detroit Times, Sunday, 20 January 1952:  The money he got with his wounds is all that kept a Korean fighter and his family from hunger and eviction Saturday.  Pfc. William Koprin, only 20, came home from 11 months of combat duty to find his invalid father, mother and a sister and brother about to be tossed out of a city-owned home.  They were $56.50 behind in their rent.  Records disclosed they were only five days behind - and this was the first time.  The father, Alex Koprin, 57, suffered an injury several years ago in a holdup.  He was too ill to go to court to defend himself in the eviction action.  Mrs. Koprin said the family had no money.  The veteran's sister, Leona, 18, had a job but gave it up recently to get married.  Her fiance, a soldier in Percy Jones Hospital, postponed the marriage for lack of funds.  Pfc. Bill's brother Donald is only 15.  He tried but couldn't do much to help.  The public welfare department refused to reinstate the Koprin family on relief rolls, on the basis that the daughter, though without employment, was physically capable.  And the landlord which insists upon tossing out the family, happens to be the Detroit Housing Commission, which points out only the bare facts that Koprins owe $17.50 for December and $39 for January for the five-room house at 17431 Sherwood, in the Emerson homes project.  Circuit Court Commissioner Tom Pasieczny didn't sign the eviction order and adjourned the case until Thursday.  He also was concerned enough about the action to insist that the legal machinery was proceeding at too great a pace and asked: "What do you want to do, put these people out in the street in this weather?"  The Koprins are reasonably philosophical about it all.  Pfc. Bill will be discharged next week and may be able to take care of things.

- Detroit Times, Friday, 25 January 1952:  Pfc. William Koprin, 20, a wounded veteran of the Korean war, was assured today of having a home to return to in case authorities release him from Percy Jones Hospital.  Through the intercession of a veterans' organization, Koprin's parents and his 18-year-old sister were saved from eviction from the house in which they are living at 17431 Sherwood.  The city had sought their eviction from the house in the Emerson housing project because they were $56.50 behind in rent.  When Alex Koprin, 57, and his wife Mary appeared before Circuit Court Commissioner A. Tom Pasieczny today, James Gattler, commander of Amvet Post 51, stepped forward with a blank check and said his organization would foot the bill for the back rent.  William was not in court.  He is in Percy Jones, where doctors will decide shortly whether he should be released.  If he obtains his discharge, William will have $980 in severance pay and insurance dividends, more than enough to straighten out the family's tangled financial affairs.
