Obituary: The Burlington Free Press (VT), Monday, 10 December 1973: Edward Roy Peters, 69, former owner of Vermont Fuel Co. of Winooski, died at Fanny Allen Hospital Saturday evening following a heart attack. He was born in Burlington Jan. 12, 1904, the son of Joseph and Sarah Peters. Mr. Peters lived at 87 Bellevue st. in Winooski. He retired in 1969. He was past president of the Winooski Eagles Club and a member of the Burlington Moose Club, Burlington Elks and the German Club of Burlington. He leaves his wife, Agnes; eight daughters, Mrs. Doris Smith, Mrs. Shirley Bergeron of Burlington; Mrs. Betty Sturgeon, Mrs. Barbara Manning and Mrs. Gail Rouille of Milton; Mrs. Arlene Brown of Enfield, N.H.; Mrs. Beverly Fay of South Burlington and Mrs. Peggy Dillon of Winooski; eight sons, Edward Roy Jr. of Malletts Bay, Robert of South Burlington, Howard of Shelburne, Kenneth of Newport, R.I., Reginald of South Hero, Leonard, Ray and William of Winooski; 50 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Betsy Fontaine of Burlington; several nieces and nephews. Peters, 95, of Winooski died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at her home with her loving family by her side. She was born Dec. 20, 1908, in Milton, the daughter of the late Moira and Ida Fontaine. Agnes was married in Winooski on Feb. 22, 1922, to Edward R. Peters Sr., who predeceased her in 1975. She was employed for many years at the American Woolen Mill in Winooski. She was a parishioner of St. Stephen Catholic Church and was a member of St. John's Club, Eagles, RVA and the VFW auxiliaries. Agnes is survived by eight daughters, Doris Smith, Shirley Bergeron and her husband Armand, Betty Sturgeon, Barbara Manning and her husband Franklin, Arlene Norton and Glenn, Gail Cameron and her husband Ray, Beverly Fay and her husband Norman, Margaret Dillon and her husband William; seven sons, Robert Peters and his wife Gervaise, Richard Peters and his wife Paulette, Kenneth Peters and his wife Irene, Reginald Peters, Leonard Peters and his wife Arlene, Raymond Peters and his partner Becky, and William Peters and his wife Anne; 49 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends. Doris Lorraine Peters: The Burlington Free Press (Burlington, VT), Sunday, 5 April 2015: (photo) Burlington - It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Doris L. (Peters) Smith. The Good Lord called her name on Good Friday, April 3, 2015, at the ripe age of 91-1/2 years, after a brief illness. Her loving family was by her side in the University of Vermont Medical Center. She was born on Oct. 10, 1923, the daughter of Edward Roy Peters and Agnes Fontaine. She was the eldest of 19 children and attended Winooski schools. She married Floyd T. Smith on Feb. 1, 1941. Doris is survived by her four children, Joan Upson of Burlington, Floyd 'Tom' Smith and partner, Patty Flynn, of Leesburg, Fla., Dana Smith of Starksboro, and Debbie Jones of Essex Junction; four grandchildren, Michael and Cheryl O'Leary of Williston, Kim and Randy Fletcher of North Carolina, Jill and Kevin Garrison of Burlington, and Benjamin Smith of Starksboro; three great-grandchildren, Christopher Atwood of North Carolina, Kaitlin Garrison 'Katie Lady' (her precious), and Kevin Thomas Garrison, her gifted athlete. She was a member of St. Mark's Parish and Ladies of St. Mark's for many years. At St. Mark's Bazaar each year, she was famous for her homemade macaroni soup, fudge and wonderful pies. In her early years, she attended St. Mark's Mass every day. She enjoyed watching baseball and was best known for her baking, love, care and compassion she showed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was so proud of all of them. She was the rock and glue that held the family together. Her generosity was known to many. She will be deeply missed and always remembered. She is also survived by her siblings, sisters, Shirley and Francis Bergeron, Barbara and Red Manning, Arlene Norton, Gail Cameron, Beverly and Norman Faye, and Peggy Dillion; brothers, Robert Peters, Ken and Irene Peters, and Billy and Ann Peters; her best friend and neighbors for the past 40 years, Gary and Mary Ackel (her angel); along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Floyd Smith, 15 years ago; brothers, Edward Roy 'Junior,' Howard, Leonard 'Porky,' Reginald, and Raymond Peters; and one sister, Betty Sturgeon. A special thanks to Sister Marie Feely who provided communion and came to visit her at her home; where she was so proud to have lived on her own. On a weekly basis, her brother, Ken and sister-in-law, Irene Peters, took her for lunches, shopping trips to Bon Ton and Macy's and provided her with lots of TLC these past years. Thanks to her tenants Garry Jones and Jull Bessette for helping her these past five years and for Garry being her 'handy man.' Edward Roy Peters: The Burlington Free Press (VT), Wednesday, 6 May 1992: Leesburg, Fla./Burlington, Vt. - Edward "Pete" Peters Jr., 65, died unexpectedly Sunday, May 3, 1992, in his Florida home. He was born in Winooski, Vt., Nov. 9, 1926, the eldest son of Edward R. Sr. and Agnes (LaFountain) Peters. Sgt. Major Peters retired in 1986 from active military service, devoting 32 years to the Vermont Army National Guard, working full time at Camp Johnson as Commo Chief for the 1/86th Artillery, headquartered at the Williston Armory. Pete was also involved with the Vermont Military Academy, Mountain Warfare School at the Ethan Allen Firing Range, and finally, in Troop Command, where he achieved his highest military rank of command sergeant major. He also served a tour of duty in Germany and served in the Korean conflict prior to his tenure with the Vermont Army National Guard. He was a member of VFW Post 1767 in Winooski. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Theresa (Provost) Peters of Burlington; six children, Kathy Peters of Jericho, Edward R. Peters III of Grand Isle, Cynthia Hamel of Richmond, Sandra Scott of West Bolton, John Peters of West Bolton, and Rebecca Haley of Grand Isle; eight grandchildren, Jolene, Joshua, Heather, Jessica, Samantha, Amanda, Edward R. Richard Howard Peters: The Burlington Free Press (VT), Saturday, 30 July 2005: Colchester - Richard Howard Peters, 75, of Colchester lost his courageous battle with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma on July 28, 2005. He died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. Richard was cherished as a loving husband, a benevolent father and caring grandfather. He was respected as a businessman, was well-known for his generous nature, his willingness to help people, and his wonderful sense of humor. May we all hold his goodness in our hearts. Richard, the son of Edward Roy and Agnes Peters, was born Jan. 24, 1930, in Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington. He attended schools in Winooski. He served in the Air Force, was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, and was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1950. He was also a member of the Vermont National Guard until 1957. He was a member of Holy Cross parish and belonged to the B.P.O.E. 916. On Oct. 13, 1951, he married the love of his life, "His Doll," Paulette Fay. Richard successfully owned and operated two businesses, Vermont Fuel Oil Company and the Big Wheel Variety Store. In his retirement years, he enjoyed playing cards, dinners with family and friends, and visiting the Maine coast and Montreal. He especially took pleasure in his seven grandchildren and always had words of wisdom or a good joke for them. He leaves his loving wife of 53 years, Paulette; his children, Linda Benoit-Bilodeau and Dr. Richard Bilodeau, Richard and Mary Jane Peters, Brenda and Tracy Titus, Howard John and Rose Peters, and Lisa and Pierre Dufresne; his grandchildren, Jeffrey Benoit, Benjamin Peters, Sam and David Titus, John and Leah Peters, Paula Marie Dufresne; his brothers and sisters, Doris Smith, Theresa Peters, Robert and Gervais Peters, Kenneth and Irene Peters, Shirley and Francis Bergeron, Arlene and Glen Norton, Barbara and Franklin Manning, Leonard and Arlene Peters, Betty Sturgeon, Reginald Peters, Gail and Raymond Cameron, Raymond Peters, William and Anne Peters, Beverly and Norman Fay, Margaret and William Dillon; his in-laws, the Fay family, Robert and Pauline, Lionel and Susan, Paul and Vicki, Alan and Kathy, Neil and Carol, Claire and the late Claude Fay. Reginald was predeceased by his brothers, Edward R., Jr., Richard, Raymond, and Leonard; and his sister, Elizabeth Sturgeon. He is survived by his son, Leroy Stenson and his two children of Missouri; his brothers, Robert, Kenneth and wife, Irene, and William and wife, Ann; his sisters, Doris Smith, Shirley Bergeron and husband, Glenn, Gail Cameron, Beverly Fay and her husband, Norman, and Margaret Dillon; and several nieces and nephews. Betty was born in Winooski on May 17, 1936, the daughter of Roy and Agnes (LaFountain) Peters. She was married to Robert Sturgeon, who predeceased her in 2002. Betty held many different jobs. She owned the Village Roost and Betty's Restaurant, where she made many friends. She was an avid bingo player and anyone who met Betty loved her. She had many friends and was loved by all. Betty is survived by her children, Patricia Stone and her husband, Larry of St. Albans, Robert Sturgeon and his wife, Linda of Franklin; three grandsons, Shawn Sturgeon and his wife, Mary, David Sturgeon and friend Erika, and Curtis Demore; three granddaughters, Stacey Demore, Melissa Cota and her husband Casey, and April Stone and her friend Mark; by her great-grandchildren, Logan and Ashlyn Sturgeon and Jonathan Madden; seven sisters; five brothers; many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Sharon Maskell, in 2003. Betty's family would like to extend a very special thanks to a very special niece, Debbie Jones, and two very special caregivers, Marge Forant and Sam Church. Leonard Louis Peters: The Burlington Free Press (VT), Monday, 18 April 2011: Winooski - Leonard L. "Porky" Peters, 70, of Winooski died suddenly on Friday, April 15, 2011. Leonard was born in Winooski on Oct. 20, 1940, the son of Edward R. Peters, Sr. and Agnes L. (Fountain) Peters. Leonard's lifetime profession was Auto Body Sales and Repair. He was active in the Vermont Army National Guard for eight years. His lifetime hobbies included gardening, hunting, and fishing. Leonard spent many hours of fun and laughter with his special friend, Lenny McDonald, among many others enjoying these pastimes. Leonard had a special way of touching people and could bring laughter and smiles to any situation. He will be greatly missed. Leonard is survived by his wife of 48 years, Arlene (Bourgault) Peters; his daughter, Kelly and her husband, Vincent Nappa, Jr., of Rockport, Mass.; his brothers, Robert, Kenneth and wife, Irene, Reginald, and William and wife, Ann; his sisters, Doris Smith, Shirley Bergeron and husband, Francis, Barbara Manning and husband, Franklin, Arlene Norton and husband, Glenn, Gail Cameron, Beverly Fay and husband, Norman, and Margaret Dillon; and several nieces and nephews, Leonard was predeceased by his brothers, Edward R. Jr., Richard, and Raymond; and his sister, Elizabeth Sturgeon. A time for friends and family to gather in Leonard's honor will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the LaVigne Funeral Home, and Cremation Service, 132 Main St. in Winooski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 12 noon at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Winooski. All friends and family are invited to a reception at the V.F.W. in Winooski following the service. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Raymond A. Peters: The Burlington Free Press (VT), Wednesday, 12 April 2006: Essex Junction - Raymond A. Peters, 64, of Essex Junction passed away peacefully on April 10, 2006, in the Respite House, with his loving family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Ray was born Dec. 14, 1941, in Wiuooski, the son of the late Edward R. and Agnes L. Peters. Raymond is survived by Becky, his love, life and soul mate; her children, Dawn Belden and her husband, Jeff, and their son, Justin, and Craig Bromley; Ray's sisters, Doris Smith, Shirley Bergeron and her husband, Armand, Betty Sturgeon, Barbara Manning and her husband, Franklin, Arlene Norton and Glenn, Gail Cameron and her husband, Ray, Beverly Fay and her husband, Norman, Margaret Dillon and her husband, William; sisters-in-law Theresa Peters and Paulette Peters; his brothers, Robert Peters and his wife, Gervaise, Kenneth Peters and his wife, Irene, Reginald Peters, Leonard Peters and his wife, Arlene, William Peters and his wife, Anne; and many, many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and Richard Peters. Ray served in the Army and also the Air National Guard. Ray was employed for many years as a body shop manager, and also worked for Mitec in Williston. Ray loved fishing, hunting and the Yankees. Many thanks to Vermont Respite House for all the love and care they gave to Ray. Thank you! A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, April 12, at 10 a.m. in St. Stephen Catholic Church in Winooski. There will be no visiting hours.
