- Plattsburgh Press-Republican (NY), Saturday, 25 June 1955: Merrill - The body of 62-year-old Edward Peets was recovered from the waters of Chateaugay Narrows here last night by State Troopers from Plattsburgh, Chazy and Dannemora. Cause of death has not yet been stated, but it was apparently from drowning. Troopers said that Peets did not know how to swim. Peets, who lived in Merrill, was out walking with his nephew, Robert Gadway of Pulaski, about 7:30 last evening, troopers said. The two men had approached a bridge over the Narrows when Peets sent his nephew back to their camp on an errand. When Gadway returned to the bridge, troopers reported, the only evidence he could find of his uncle was the elderly man’s sweater. Gadway summoned troopers who, after searching the general area for Peets, started dragging the waters near the bridge. The bridge has a span of about 75 feet and is 15 to 20 feet above the water. The troopers, aided by civilians in the area, used one State Police outboard and one local outboard with dragging apparatus. Floodlights powered by auxiliary motors provided light for the operation. Peets’ body was recovered at about 9:45, troopers said. A widower, Peets lived with his mother, Mrs. Delia Peets. He had no children. His 27-year-old nephew was spending his vacation with him. Dr. Dana Weeks, Clinton County Coroner, named Dr. Sheridan Keysor of Standish as coroner’s physician. The body was removed to the Chateaugay Funeral Home. State police said the Bureau of Criminal Investigation would continue the investigation today.
