Obituary:  The Minneapolis Journal (Minneapolis, MN), Sunday, 16 January 1938:  Second Man Shot in Gunfight with Detectives Dies - Earl La Shomb, 26-year-old alleged bandit wounded in a gun battle with St. Paul detectives Tuesday in which a companion was killed and a detective was wounded, died last night in Ancker hospital.  St. Paul reports said they were unable to question La Shomb concerning his activities with the gang which is believed responsible for several recent holdups and car thefts in that city.  La Shomb never fully regained consciousness, hospital attendants said.  Richard Fortuna, 22, captured in the gun fight, and only remaining survivor of the gang, was still undergoing police questioning yesterday.  Frank Van Dorn, 30, third member of the gang, died a short time after the shooting, which occurred in a rifle range at 477 St. Peter street, St. Paul, following a filling station holdup.  La Shomb, who lived at 412 Aurora avenue, St. Paul, is survived by his widow and two sons.
