Obituary:  Gouverneur, Tribune Press (NY), Wednesday, 29 January 1997:  Gouverneur:  The funeral for Donald R. Pete, 75, formerly of Jefferson Street, was held Saturday at Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur, with Monsignor Gerald Service, pastor of St. Mary's Church, Canton, officiating.  Burial will be in East Riverside Cemetery.  Mr. Pete died early Thursday, January 23, 1997 at Kinney Nursing Home.  Mr. Pete was a bartender at the former Lido Restaurant and later at Roma Restaurant.  He was then employed at Grovetor Paper Co., Natural Dam, and later worked for the village of Gouverneur in its Department of Public Works, retiring in 1985.  Born July 17, 1921 in Gouverneur, son of Emery and Eva McCartha Pete, he attended Gouverneur schools and served in the Navy during World War II.  He married Elva R. Walts, August 28, 1948 at Gouverneur First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joseph A. Schofield Jr., pastor, officiating.  They were longtime residents of Jefferson Street.  Mrs. Pete died February 12, 1988.  Mr. Pete had resided at St. Joseph's Nursing Home, Ogdensburg, before moving to Kinney Nursing Home in February 1995.  He was a former member of Gouverneur Fire Department, the Gouverneur Exempt Firemen, Gouverneur Veterans of Foreign Wars, Gouverneur American Legion and Elks Lodge 2035.  Surviving are a stepdaughter, Mrs. Thomas Shirley Allen, Star Lake; three step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; aunts, an uncle and cousins.  A brother, Douglas E. died before him.  Donations may be made to Gouverneur Fire Department.

Obituary:  Tampa Bay Times (St. Petersburg, FL), Sunday, 30 April 2000:  DeGrace, Gwendolyn C., 75, of Port Richey, died Thursday (April 27, 2000) at home.  Born in Gouverneur, N.Y., she came here 22 years ago from Utica, N.Y., and was a retired waitress.  She was a Catholic.  Survivors include a son, Timothy, Remsen, N.Y.; a daughter, Jacqueline Cookinham, Utica, a sister, Dorothy Macauley, Gouverneur; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.  Thomas B. Dobies Funeral Homes, New Port Richey Chapel.

Obituary:  Gouverneur Tribune Press (NY), Wednesday, 17 February 1988:  The funeral for Elva R. Pete, 69, formerly of 16 Jefferson Street, Gouverneur, was held Feb. 15 at Green Funeral Home, with Rev. Gerald Service, pastor of St. James church, officiating.  Burial was in East Riverside Cemetery.  Mrs. Pete died Feb. 12 at Kinney Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since February, 1987.  Memorial donations may be made to Gouverneur Rescue Squad or Gouverneur Fire Department.  Surviving are her husband, Donald R.; a daughter, Shirley Allen, Hailesboro; three granddaughters, Debrah Benware, Syracuse, Donna Shippee, Brasie Corners, and Lynette Michalik, Dover, N.H.; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Bessie Starr, Evans Mills, and nephews.  A sister, Eva Empson, and a brother, Clarance Walts, died previously.  She was born Dec.14, 1918 in the Town of LeRay, a daughter of Carl and Sarah Brient Walts.  She attended school at Evans Mills.  She was married in August 1948 to Donald R. Pete at First Presbyterian Church, Gouverneur.  She was employed for 15 years at W. T. Grant Company store, Gouverneur, and was a 15-year employee of Rushmore Paper Mills, Natural Dam.  She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Antwerp.

Jacqueline Pete:  Observer Dispatch (Utica, NY), Monday, 27 June 2005:  Mrs. Jacqueline L. Cookinham, 59, of the Perretta Twin Towers, Utica, passed on Sunday, June 26, 2005, at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital.  Jackie was born in Gouverneur, NY, on November 30, 1945 the daughter of Dominick and Gwendolyn (Gaddis) DeGrace.  She was raised and educated in Gouverneur and Utica and was graduate of Proctor High School.  Jackie married James R. Cookinham Sr. in Schuyler, NY.  For many years, she was employed in dietary with Utica Head Start, later with The House of The Good Shepherd and until her illness with St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica.  She was a parishioner of St. Joseph St. Patrick Church, Utica; and enjoyed spending time doing crafts.  Jackie was a loving mother and grandmother who devoted her life to the care and nurturing of her beloved family.  Mrs. Cookinham is survived by her husband, James; two daughters and one son-in-law, Michelle and John Hickey, Utica; and Kim Cookinham, New Hartford; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Dominick Manno, Sodus, NY, James Cookinham Jr. and his companion, Brenda Nicotera, Utica, and Christopher and Susanne Cookinham, Utica; four stepdaughters and their families in Florida; one brother and sister-in-law, Timothy and Charlene DeGrace, Hinckley, NY; mother-in-law, Rose Wiernicki, Ilion; brother-in-law, Larry Cookinham and his wife, Judy, Ilion; 20 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.  Mrs. Cookinham's funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at 8:30 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, Utica.  Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.  Calling hours for family and friends are Tuesday, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., prior to the service.  Mrs. Cookinham's family extends their gratitude to the many doctors who cared for Jackie over the years.  Your professionalism and excellent care will not be forgotten.  A heartfelt thank you to Pat Rosati for the love and compassion you showed to Jackie and her family.  You will be forever in our hearts.
