Charles Pitre

17 November 1723 Port Royal – 11 September 1772 Quebec

Charles Pitre was born on the 17th of November 1723 at Port Royal, Acadia, the 7th child and third son of Claude Pitre and his second wife Anne (Jeanne) Henry.  He was the second-to-last child born into a family which had eight children born to each of Claude’s two wives.

Charles seemed to have remained single longer than usual, possibly due to the death of his father, which occurred between 1729 and 1750.  We find him in Chipoudy in 1752 with his widowed mother and sister.  Around 1759 he married 16-year-old Marie Angelique Blanchard and they took refuge in Restigouche c1760.  They are prisoners at Halifax in 1763, finally settling in St. Francois du Lac, Quebec.

It would appear the couple had five children, but I can find only one marriage for a child of Charles and Marie Angelique, that of Marie Pitre born c1760 at St. Francois du Lac in Quebec.  Marie appears to have spent the rest of her life in Yamaska.  She married there on 10th October 1785 to Jean Baptiste Desmarais, who died in 1829, and Marie 22 years later in 1851.

Marie Angelique Blanchard died in St. Francois du Lac on 5th March 1772 at the age of 28.  Charles died six months later on 11th September.  The other four children preceded them in death.

- A few early registers are so degraded I have relied on the PRDH extractions in those cases.
