Misc. Items: Hunter Reports Wild Man Deep In Forestland [Ticonderoga Sentinel, NY, Thursday, 2 December 1948]: TUPPER LAKE - Is there a "wild man" roaming the woods in the heavily-forested Kildare country? Lawrence Peets of Schuylervllle claims there is, and old timers who recall authentic similar cases know that it is entirely possible. Peets claims to have encountered the man while deer hunting not far from the deserted site of Kildare, once a busy little logging settlement seven miles from Tupper Lake on the old New York and Ottawa Railroad right-of-way. According to his report, he had taken up his stand on the long-abandoned logging railroad which branches off into the woods from Kildare, while his companion, Alfred Berard of North Tonawanda, made a swing across the nearby Jordan River in hopes of putting out a deer. Peets asserts that he was startled by a sudden "whimpering" noise behind him, and turned to encounter the "wild man" standing in the trail and looking at him. He describes the man as having heavy, dirty blond hair; a long unkempt beard, and dressed in a weird combination of rabbit skins and rags. One arm, he said, was bound up in grass and fern brakes, as though it had been injured. He carried a rabbit but no gun. When Peets spoke to him, he states, the man darted off into the woods. Berard rejoined Peets a few minutes later, and the two searched the woods in vain for another glimpse of the man. They reported their experience at the Kildare gate house, and hunters in that area, as well as sportsmen and employees traversing that sector en route to the O. W. D. and Kildare club holdings are on the lookout for his possible reappearance.
